generally:
- work on exposure
-give more thought to the composition first before looking at LCD
and composing as you go 
-use a little fill-in flash for close-ups (some cameras allow you
to have low-power flash, also consider pasting transluscent
material (tissue?) over flash to reduce the flash power ..(t
prevent wash outs - i often use that on normal cameras or digital
ones for portraitures)
