Online Electioneering
A Straits Times reporter asked me a bunch of questions over email.
Here are the questions and the answers, in case you don't read it
verbatim in the Straits Times.
What's the site about, and what sort of content do you intend to
run for GE2006?
The site is about free speech for Singaporeans. The content we run
would be based on what our columnists write. If they choose to
write abt GE2006, then that would be what the site would
have.
Have you read about the electioneering rules for online
content/sites?
No I havent, and Im not interested.
Have you already registered with MDA?
No.
If yes, did you do it yourself, or did the MDA ask you to do so,
and when was this?
N.A.
If not, has the MDA approached you to register?
No they havent.
If so, what was the reason they asked you to do so?
N.A.
Would you/are you registering?
No.
What would dissuade you from registering, eg, giving information
about yourself, fees, procedures, etc.?
Whats the point of registering? Would it help me run my site
better? Or would it go against what my site aims to do, which is to
provide free speech?
Do you already host any audio/video files on the site?
No.
If not, are you planning to run stuff like political audio or video
of rallies, etc?
If the columnists do.
If you are, do you know that this would break the electioneering
laws?
Indeed? Ok then, maybe we should upload videos to Google Video or
YouTube then? Which one do you suggest?
Are you concerned that government/MDA might come after you
then?
Not if its hosted by Google Video, right? Or YouTube.
What's your name, age, and what do you do? [if you aren't keen to
give me your name, at least, your age and occupation then?]
Sorry! Nice try though.
