Everytime I read the newspapers and see so many ads for cars and
condominiums I begin to wonder – are there so many rich
Singaporeans? It’s hard to believe that 90% of Singaporeans live in
HDB flats, when you see so many new
condominiums sprouting up. I think such ads have an important role
in promoting the increasingly materialistic outlook of young
Singaporeans, by portraying condominiums and cars as desirable, or
even need-to-have, status items. Just look at the ad for the One
Amber condominiums, which state that living in the condominium is a
mark of success. Does that imply that HDB
dwellers are losers?
