The widening income gap is a consequence of changes to the tax
structure, namely, lowering of income tax and (a few years ago)
raising of sales tax. Income taxation is progressive whereas sales
taxation is regressive. As such, the gap can easily be closed in
the future should a need arise by further modifying these two
taxes. Thus, the widening of the income gap is not a real physical
problem, but an artefact of tax structures that can be overcome, if
and should such a need arise.
