I believe that I posted up a commentary by Phillip Bowring on the inaccuracy of the Heritage Foundation's classification fo Singapore and HK as economically free. Singapore does NOT have a free economy in practice. Notice the prevalence of the tripartite wage system which clearly shopws a government-controlled labour market. If you need further proof, turn to your adjustable CPF contribution rates - forced savings controlled by the government - and TLCs and GLCs. All these show massive government management of the economy, which does NOT feature in a free economy at all, or at least features in VERY SMALL amounts.

i'm sure they do. the salaries they enjoy, the convieniences they enjoy, the power they enjoy ... maybe not in the ways you've mentioned but i'd rather drink my own whisky in my own library in my own bungalow with my own lawn, i'd prefer to be chauffered around with traffic lights stopped for me than jam brake my ferrari every 200 metres or so, and nothing but a nice puff in the comforts of my own study ...

they don't have to worry about getting retrenched. they don't have to worry about foreign talent. when things are good they say it's all their credit. when things go bad they blame the world economy, laziness and unimaginativeness of our people ... everything but themselves. a much better life than the average citizen isn't it?

LKY sucks,when it is time for him to retire n enjoy his life,he dont want to do that.Instead,he hold on the post n continue to take taxpayers money n keep talking rubbish like what "Western democracy is not suitable in Singapore or Asia blah blah blah".What does he trying to say,we Asians are not human?No need to eat,no need to sleep,no need to have sex?

What really behind his mind is to continue to rule Singapore by his dictatorial type of ruling.He is not a man.A real modern man wont be craving for power like him.Becoz he will know that when he dies,everything will gone ashes.The person i truly admire is Dr.Mahathir,Lee Teng Hui n Boris Yeltsen,they all successfully change the political structure of their country or build up their country's economy.Most importantly,they know when to step down n retire n enjoy their life.Not like Lee Kuan Yew,keep craving for power,Not A Man!!!

i suppose retirement is an individual choice if one can help it. however, as you've mentioned, since he already has all the money he is ever going to need, why does he still need such a high salary? why not settle for a token allowance while continuing to enjoy his work?

Lets not take LKY contribution for granted. You have to know that when this man talk, everybody listen and why should you ask for his retirement when is doing good for the country?

as you're saying, what LKY says, everybody listens. in other words everyone believes in LKY so if he says he will retire for good, who would doubt his words, let alone have anything to bitch about?

no one's taking him for granted nor asking him to retire. all we're questioning is his rationale for staying in office. if concern for the nation is his ultimate purpose, then salary shouldn't matter, so serving for an allowance rather than a full salary wouldn't be inappropriate ... especially if he truly feels for his struggling subjects.

I still prefer LKY era, where they are really building up Singapore. And it is one of the cleanest government around. No peanuts and monkey buisness around.

Everyone listen to LKY when he talk?Since when?I think it is only his own "imagination" that thought everyone listen to him when he "talk big" Mr. Green .........If u were to go other countries n ask those foreigners on the street who is Lee Kuan Yew,they might ask u back who the hell is he? I have been to so many countries already, and one thing for sure, any businessman who has dealing with singapore will know who is LKY. Some even have LKY biography. Maybe you should travel more and talk to matured people before you making the above statement.

If nobody like listening to LKY, then why is he always invited to be guest speaker at overseas business conference? Maybe you have no interested in international business and policy, thats why whatever LKY say it has no meaning to you.

I didnt say that you should believe what LKY has to say. What I was saying is that people like to listen to LKY's opinion about international policy and his vision. No?

If you want to safe on minister's salary, I think LKY should last person that you want target.
