Today the newspaper reported that the opposition had a meeting to plan which ward to contest. To avoid three-corned Fights.
The opposition plan to contest all the SMC wards and at least 6 GRC out of the 14..........
They will follow this plan unless boundaries are redrawn

Suggestion to Opposition. The old strategies of allowing the PAP to come into power on nomination day had proved unworkable for decades. This old strategy is only worth when we have many older voters then.

For once, why not try to contest on all wards. Just make sure there is no 3 corners fight. Now there are many younger 3rd generation voters who are more educated and dying to vote against the ruling party. We can then see the change in demograhics too. It may surprise you as how much have changed.

Use the results to plan your new strategies for future GE rather than to stick to such old and proven unsuccessful approach. Who knows, maybe the opposition can capture 1 GRC and that could knock them off their comfort zone.

My first question is, would you want to contest in the first place? If not, where can find 84 good candidates in Singapore?

Second question is, if you are not willing or not cut to be a front line guy, would you sponsor one team or one single candidate for their/his election campaign? If not, where got so much money to stand in 84 seats? ($13K x 84=$1.092 million)

Third question, if you are not willing to stand and do not have money to spare, then are you willing to help out in election campaigns? (eg. polling agents, election agents, counting agents, distribute profiles and flyers, put up election posters, organize political rallies, help out in our walkabout, all sorts of activities...etc) If not, where got enough people to support 84 candidates for their campaigning? For the simple task of polling agents, You need at least 50 to 100 polling agents for each candidates, 84*100=8400! We do not even have half of that to start with!

If you couldn't contribute all the above three, then there is only one thing you could do; treasure your vote whenever you got the chance to vote. If you are going to be bought over by little goodies like HDB upgrading (hey, its not FREE also you know!) and handouts, so be it... alternative parties will not grow and don't complain we aren't contesting all seats.

Other than contesting as an opposition or casting your vote wisely, there is another thing that a singaporean can do

- Educate others, especially people over 40 yrs old with little education.

1.
She should educate her parents and elderly relatives and friends that they are NEVER the owner of their HDB flats. Tell them the fact is that they or their children or grandchildren will LOSE ALL their monies "invested" in their HDB flats.

2.
Bring the elderlies to hawker centres and show them how other elderlies are working hard to survive. Show them newspapers articles that elderlies in Switzerland are retiring nicely.

3.
If the elderlies do not want to listen to you, treat them to a coffee with some elderly taxi drivers. Elderlies tend to believe in their own group of people.

Point 3 should be the most effective. When you are out visiting relatives during Chinese/Malay new year with your parents, talk to the taxi drivers. The drivers should be able to educate your parents well.

Remember, don't argue too much with your parents, else it will achieve an opposite effect. Educate them base on their love for you and their grandchildren.

In short, just tell them "for the sake of your children and grandchildren, vote wisely".

My suggestion is just an honest and harmless thought I had. From your reply, it simply shows how untactful you are in handling such suggestions. You can't even win supporters in the wedsite.

The opposition can't even find 84 out of 4 million ppl around. That shows the opposition is really weak. You don't even have the ppl.

You don't have sponsors for $1.092m? I suggest you rope in TT Durai. You seem to foresee that your candidates are going to lose everything including their pants. You are prepared to lose even the deposits. I don't think you should be in politics at all.

Sadly, looking at your readiness to lose all, voluteering for a wasted afford is unwise when you already have lost the mind battle.

Looks like you don't even have strategies for long term. You are not concern about the changes over the decades. You are justing trying to hit and run. That's not politics.

Looks like there is one more for the spoilt votes.

For the Opposition to win, it will have to show that it is credible. If you want to cut taxes, you will have show how you will meet the shortfall. If you want to get rid of foreign talent, you must provide an alternative to the construction industry that needs cheap labour and the Singaporean families who want maids that work all day without weekends off.

I know your suggestions are just harmless; however, I may sound "tactless" but this is the HARD FACT of REALITY that I am telling. It is easy for people to make suggestion without making due considerations.

I have NEVER DENY that AT THIS VERY MOMENT, alternative or non-PAP parties ARE VERY VERY WEAK; thus, we need more people like you with a good social-political consciousness to JOIN or help out, not merely standing on the sideline to make suggestions and comments.

We may not LOSE every deposits, not even losing ANY deposits but the fact is, YOU NEED THIS AMOUNT OF MONEY FIRST right before you could enter into the field! This is the NECESSARY conditions to be met first! Put it another way, if you have $1 million would you want to lend it to us in the very place? We will return it to you if we did not lose any deposits, deal? How many people in Singapore would lend us that kind of money?

We are prepared BOTH to win and/or lose. This should be the correct mindset. Even so, we still need the "entry fee" of $1million!

If you are talking about long term, then you would not be asking us to field all seats! We could find the ALL the candidates we wamt but of what quality? If most people of quality like you shy away from participation, then naturally there will only be "lousy" candidates left!

I would say you have the loser mindset, not me. At least I chose to fight on, get dirty in the mud but you have no committal to help in any ways but resigned to spoil your vote!

We have long term strategy, but a very REALISTIC one. PAP didn't field all seats when they first started. They are being realistic. At this moment, we are starting from scratch, all over again. Thus, we could only do our best to field as many good candidates we have but the cruel truth is, there are many people out there like you, prefer not to do anything except spoiling your votes. Thus, it is not possible for us to field all seats right now and WE as a nation have to live with it, you included.

This is chicken and egg thing. If you are not prepared to help or join us, then please don't complain "opposition is weak". We are so because there aren't enough people willing to take risks or contribute. period.

A good politician should be patient and mindful as to how to refute views in a diplomatic way. Sadly, I did not see any quality in you as a politician. Instead of expressing your views on a suggestion, you bluntly rebutted with sarcasm.

You should use the Internet to garner more support rather than to antagonize your potential supporters. I shall not waste your time to refute your views but I have a very important suggestion for you. You should stop posting replies as an opposition representative because you are doing more damages than good for the opposition camp.

I certainly agree that there are not many good men out there in the opposition camp. You have proven beyond doubts. While you roll in mud and dirty yourself, spare some thoughts for your spouse or mum who had to wash the dirty linen. Laughing

Don't expect politics to be such an unstained wedding sheet.I'm happier that he can reply in a down-to-earth tones than some contrived holier than thou magnificiently polite and esteemed reply.The former is real, the latter, a construct that cannot be trusted to know the ground and feel the earth.

Hi,

I think you need an overall mindset overhaul.

Firstly, GMS is merely trying to say that politicians come from voters. This is a fact. Like the game "Age of Empires", before you can create a stronger army, you need villagers first.

Secondly, if you measure a good politician as one who says nice things that people like to hear and a bad politician as one who is otherwise, then I think you need to think deeper.

In fact, often, politicians who say nice things usually turn out to be bad politicians.

If I really sounded that "sarcastic" to you, I apologize to you but I mean every word that I say in my last post.

I am a person that either you like me very much or you hate me like hell. Wink Why? Because I am a straight talker. Diplomacy? I hardly want to use it though I am not alien to it. Diplomacy to me, is used for scheming, politicking and nothing else. Diplomacy is not for frank discussions.

I mean it when I say "people of quality like you" with no slanted intention. There are indeed many people who are as qualified as you are who think the same way. I also mean it when I say you are a person who are socially and politically conscious, else you will not be writing in forums like this one. I empathize with you very much basically because I was just like you before I joined WP.... an armchair critic on the net. When I sounded harsh to you, I am actually being harsh to my old self and it serves a strong reminder why I am in WP and what am I fighting for. I also mean it when I say "you have the loser mindset", these don't contradict.

You may be highly educated, most probably have higher qualifications than I do but you are deprived of the real feel on the ground basically because you lack the exposure and experience in participating in the process itself. Qualified you may be, but igonrance that you are, in terms of
"opposition politics". No pune intended, it is not entirely your fault but the lack of experiences and exposures.

I would say that I reserve my sarcasm to the ruling party, not a layman like you. For goodness sake, I don't even know you why should I be sarcastic to you?

I think there is a difference between sweet talking voters and sweet talking you.

Yes, politicians who sweet talk tend to be more successful, especially in Singapore, but may find limited success. At the end of the day, the effective politician rules.

I can agree on a macro basis, but at an individual level (e.g. me to you), I would encourage people not to listen to just sweet talk. Furthermore, you should be one of the more discerning ones (that explains your presence here) or unless maybe I am wrong.

To think of it, perhaps the reason why Singapore is stuck politically is because the people only listen to sweet talk?

If you for one like to be sweet talked, fine, it's your wish. Not that I have anything against that.

Our opposition party cannot even win enough seats in Parliament? They don't stand a chance. One of the reasons is they can't even communicate effectively and diplomatically. You just slapped yourself in the face.
