it depends on how you see it lah ... if you squeeze the higher
income earners too much, you'd lessen the incentive for them to
strive, people'd think, what's the point of slogging so hard, when
in the end any increase in my income will be taxed away anyways ?
an example, in some western countries like Canada, you'd end up
around 40% income tax at the higher end of the earning scale, so
you'd end up with lawyers having about as much take home pay as a,
say, admin personal working for some goverment department, everyone
can drive a new chevy or mazda of course, but you wouldn't see a
lot of new cadillacs or mercedes around ... is that a good
situation ? ... that is something society has to decide ...
we may ascribe that statement from the chappie to the callowness
and bravado of the young, but while i think such drive and spirit
should be encouraged, I think we may be going down the wrong path
if the young only sees life as one big Darwinian competition, and
turn into cold, calculating and competitive creatures, in the end
materialism alone won't satisfy the soul, which is perhaps why some
in Singapore feel so hollow and empty inside ... even if you win
the rat race ... you're still be a rat, eh ? ...
