Heartlander SG It's a simple logic, if you were in their shoes, you would shout to your level best that the economy is doing very very well, so that you could pay yourself another one or two milions more in salary or another 12 months of peanuts bonuses! The best way to gauge the performance of the economy may be through the words of taxi drivers or from those hawker stalls. Looks like the food stalls are also drying up in its customers petronising them. The local media are the last one you should believe in the health of the economy! No matter what, you will see more heartlanders drifting further down into the poverty traught and the rich are surely getting richer!
Salman SG taxi drivers always complain even during good times. Only fools will use taxi drivers as a gauge for the economy.
av98m SG Hmm...using your definition then yes, for me the economy is recovering. But seriously, I feel that the economy is not doing as well as the papers are saying but its not exactly doom and gloom either.
snow leopard SG but all the riches are in the hands of the govt! we're just virtual slaves in a rich country, run by rich elites!
dragg SG with about US200 billlion in reserves, the highest paid ministers in the world and the highest jump in the number of millionaires yet we have so many people rummaging through the dustbins for empty cans, people waiting for 2nd hand text books and whatnot. true, we are not doing badly.
Salman SG How bad can we possibly be? Have you seen how many homeless people are there in Seoul, San Francisco, London, etc? I suggest you travel the world and open your eyes, just cross over to Batam, and then come back and tell us that the govt is lousy.
iamgoondu SG Yes our economy is recovering! You shall notice that many drinks/beers sold in 7-11 went up by 10-20cents from today! Hope the increase by 7-11 won't trigger a rise in cofffee/drinks/food in coffee shops and food courts.
dragg SG being better doesnt mean it is good enough. base on your thinking every singaporean cannot complain about anything anymore.
Salman SG Complain intelligently and constructively. What do you expect the govt to do when the Yuan is under valued and Chinese choose to work for so much less and Singaporeans are so lazy and soft?
siginah SG Sir, That's like saying that the homeless man sleeping in a Tokyo subway station can't be doing too badly because Japan is the richest country in Asia. From an individual perspective, the important measure is the distribution of wealth rather than the level of aggregate wealth. regards, siginah
siginah SG The price increases should not be surprising if one considers what has been happening to global commodity markets in the past 2 years. Take a can of soft drink as an example. The sugar inside the drink, the can containing the drink, and the energy required to produce that can of drink have all been going up in price. The only surprise is that it took so long for the price increases to filter down from the primary markets to the consumers. regards, siginah
Salman SG How can all these commodity prices be going up if there is no strong demand? Don't you know that world wide commodity supply has gone up too? Are you sure you know economics?
chunyong SG well, imagine u have alot of $ in CPF...but are u rich ? can u draw out 100% of it and spend rite now ? cannot rite ? same logic...country rich not = u rich
snow leopard SG in the case of oil, it is more difficult to find oil or for that matter drill new wells so that increase in supply lags behind demand increase resulting in price shooting up ... simple economics
snow leopard SG exactly, you don't have a lot of money to begin with yet a huge chunk gets locked in CPF which leaves you with even lesser money to spend ...
Salman SG CPF is a percentage of the chunk of money you earned. You gotta have a ton of money to begin with for a chunk of CPF to exist. What did you do with that ton of money minus that small chunk? You gambled it away on the market? You spent it of leisure?
Salman SG Total worldwide oil production increased but demand increased even more and prices went up. Sounds like economic boom doesn't it?
