It doesnt matter when Hotel New World collapse...the fact is it did
and things like that should not have been allowed to happen. 100
years from now, if another building collapse, people will still
look back at the Hotel New World and Nicol Highway incidents.
Building a hotel may not be the same as a tunnel along a coast but
the principles are the same. Safety considerations, stringent
checks, Calculations verified and approved by licensed person,
getting the right contractor, the right equipment and the right
materials....etc.
I wouldnt say Ng is a scapegoat...he is responsible by law. But by
conscience, the Government should take a long hard look at
themselves and admit that they could have done better to prevent
such an incident.
Blaming the contractors alone is not a long-term solution. The
Goverment should lead by example and correct any loopholes in the
regulations or policies.
I, personally, do not ask for the Ministry to admit publicly that
htey are partly at fault. All I ask is for the assurance that all
of us and our future generations will be able to live, work and
play in an environment that is safe,
