Like I said before, they only make the millions because of tax writebacks., as in the case of SMRT. WIthout the tax writebacks, they would probably be in the red.

The cheatings done by commuters has an indirect effect on the wages of the employees in the company as revenue and profit is affected. And 9 million SGD is not a negligible impact. 9 million SGD could result in higher wages for the employees and perhaps, slightly higher dividend payout.

Appealing to the government for help is probably a very good solution to the problem. Legislation is very effective in Singapore. This solution is also cost effective. The company does not need to incur extra charges and effectively roots out a problem which have been plaguing them for the past decade.

People who cheat bus companies on fares = Jail...
What about bus companies who "cheat" commuters of their time?

Especially during peak hours, some buses can be so packed that commuters cannot even board them. And very often the waiting time stated on bus-stops are not accurate.

And when that happens, a "sorry for the inconvenience" is all they can say?
So, we're sorry for the inconvenience of you having to lose $9m a year from fare cheats too!!!

my dad is a taxi driver. he's been cheated by a passenger a couple of times. the passengers just run away when the taxi stops.

just last week, my dad picked up a couple frm mohd sultan to ang mo kio. presumably, the guy was walking the gf up to her flat. so he told my dad to stay. he gave my dad $10 as a deposit. but my dad fierce, "dont give me ur $10. i believe you that you will come back." and the guy came back and told my dad, "jurong". wahhh shiok ahh.. mohd sultan - ang mo kio - jurong. do your own maths. midnight surcharge hor.

The reason for their bochap-ness lies behind their monopoly of the transport industry.

I don't think buses packed like sardine cans is the definition of good service and certainly not, a reason for us to pay more. Yet they raise the bus prices year after year. If they can forcingly "cheat" commuters like that, can't we do the same?

Raising bus prices as and when they like because they are the SOLE bus service providers in town. Bochap-ness whether buses are overcrowded or not because like it or not, we have to get on board anyway.

Some other countries give their bus drivers higher salaries and commuters pay a flat rate no matter how many buses they have to switch to get to their destination, and yet they can make money.

Bus companies here charge commuters every time they hop onto a bus, their drivers aren't paid that much, with all that advertising going on in buses, and they aren't making any money?

The issue comes to this, the cost and everything is by right set by the govt, the road tax and ERP or sort...

It cost $1200 a year for a bus's road tax vs a car's $800+. In Malaysia, a public bus road tax is RM30 a yr vs car's RM300 a year

You have to see which country you are talking abt, in Aust and UK, the govt pay the bus co to run the sv... The govt collects all of their revenue
