I am not saying that racism doesn't exist. However, the feeling
of racism can also be exaggerated by the individual insecurities.
Typically, there will be cases of cultural insensitivities. Like
things that are a the norm over in sg might not be elsewhere. When
such issues happens, there sometimes will be a tendency to
categorize them as racists acts. Simple acts of hooliganism when
directed at a person of different ethnicity can be taken as a
racist attack as question as to why the person was targetted. But
sometime, they are just victims of chance or bad luck in this
case.
The problem exists on both sides of the track. In fact, a
observation is that quite a number of overseas students tend to
gather in clique of similar ethnic backgrounds. When that happens,
the impression it leaves on average local can be that what is
wrong? why can't they mix? yes, one might say maybe there is a
language divide, but the idea is to break down those barriers and
it cannot be achieved if one is hiddened behind one's cultural
defenses. but then there is arguement that why must one mix with
another ethnicity or citizenship when one can easily intermingle
with person/s of like backgrounds.
The issue is a delicate one, and those are just two examples. There
are more.
What I am saying is that racism exist everywhere and on many
different levels. Both in Sg and Oz. It is unfair to put either
down as being a unhealthy environment to live in. I have been in Oz
for these past years and have yet to experience any racist attacks.
It all depends on the mindset that one maintains when entering a
different environment.
