Malaysia.....I hear so many horror stories from my customers until sian liao. One of them, new Camry, park in 5 star hotel carpark, come back time, car gone....

Some NTU lecturer had a 1st hand experience with some department statistics....

Singapore is well known for reporting 'very low' crime statistics.
Someone asked 'Where is Singapore?' - well of course, Singapore cannot be on it, as its so safe...

lwflee SG

Yes, but i doubt many would call South africa "safe".

zoik SG

My SA friends tell me that theres a few nice places, but there are definately some places where you should never go, without some form of security/self-defence.
As such its likely that these figures are in concentrated areas (well known high crime spots with really high rape figures) - much like any other statistic in any country really..

lwflee SG

I agree. Which leads me to another flaw skyline's post. In other countries, you can move to safer areas. Singapore is too small for any move to have an appreciable effect.

dragg SG

Iwflee,

i believe you are not happy about certain things. but not everything is bad.

lwflee SG

Actually, i have no realy complains about crime in Singapore. Neither do i have any complains about crime in the area i am living in now. I just disagree with the thrust of Skyline’s post.

dragg SG

make up your mind. you are contradicting yourself. you said earlier that rape cases are proportionately higher in populous countries. south africa ranked 2nd but has a population of only 42 million.

that proves your theory is flawed.

dragg SG

why do you disagree with his posting? i am sure he did not get the statistics out of thin air.

lwflee SG

I agree that my theory is flawed. I omitted to include a "likely" in the sentence concerned. I also want to add that many other factors like apartheid, how crime is defined, etc, will impact on the accuracy of that sentence. Nevertheless, i think that the theory is generally sound.

lwflee SG

I disagreed with what i perceived was the general thrust of his post. To me, it appears that his argument was that Singapore's incidences of rape was way way way below that of other countries. I feel that to draw such a conclusion from the statistics posted is wrong. Now, other statistics might support his argument, but that does not change the fact that the statistics he posted does not support his argument.

dragg SG

the lowest in skyline63's list was latvia at 104. i think it is reasonable enough for singapore to have less than that.

anyway i searched goggle but it came up with nothing useful on rape statistics.

That is simply not possible. If you count the reports of women getting raped last year(ST) as well as the documented cases by the counseling agencies it clearly exceeds 104. I'm not suprised you didn't find anything in google, you'll have to personally go down to these agencies and even then they make it difficult for you to obtain numbers.

from a 2001 press report:

[rape was down..] while there were 122 reported rapes, two fewer than the previous year.

However, the number of rapes which arose out of contact made through the Internet and chat lines rose from six to eight.

And thats even after the 'massaged' official figures..

four years on and Singapore is rape-free?

woops! 116 in 2003.

even so, i still think there can be no real meaningful comparision of international crime rates.

Hey asshole, China has 1.6 billion people and it is not in the top 50? Go to hell.

iveco SG

What point are you trying to make?

hisoka SG

china probably covered up also like singapore lor anyway no idea why the rankings are based on absolute numbers, like that singapore almost cannot get in le.

hmm, our government always want to be number one why never ask us to be number one in this respect?

iveco SG

Hahaha, good point.
