I think this time round might be a smarter approach? A or B, both also actually elected by them? (Maybe even 'C' if they wanna make a better cover-up?) Or if...

During the first Presidential elections, Chua Kim Yeow was urged to contest against Ong so as to give a show to Singapore and the world at large that finally the government of Singapore is letting the citizens elect their own President. Ong won by a margin of 17% of the votes and served as President from 1993 to 1999 before losing favour with the ruling party at the end of his term.

Government nominee S.R. Nathan won uncontested in the 1999 Presidential elections. He may yet win another similar victory again should the private tutor candidate fails to qualify again.

Don't see why we need a President when we have 3 PMs
and why do we need to pay $2.4 million to have a President
(who basically does nothing)?

To have a DPM retired and paid to "retire" in the President post looks
so silly and uninspiring.

Where in the world do you see $2.4 million paid to a "CEO"
for doing nothing?

Singapore needs a President to do real audit and fund management work
on the national reserves. How to safeguard the reserves when the President doesn't know what makes up the reserves and where they are going?

The President post sure needs a remaking.

Cool

Our late President Ong tried his very best to do the above, but was stonewalled by the ruling party every single step of the way. May he rest in peace. Crying or Very sad

no. not being racist, but putting an indian in a position where he cannot speak freely? that is a torture of the highest magnitude. I'd imagine he certainly would want to retire. Laughing

You may be right. He did hinted at retirement when in Malaysia, but the government may have other plans -- he has fulfilled his ceremonial role well, if nothing else. Anyway, nothing is confirmed till the government makes an official statement.
