PSC scholar makes racist blog entries

PSC scholar, Chua Cheng Zhan, studying in Northwestern University make at least two disparaging remarks about other races on his personal online journal. He used words like `repulsive' to describe some races and talked about their `irksome features' In defence, he said that he was not himself when he wrote these things. I did not use his own persona when he wrote on his blog.

What do you guys think? As a returning PSC overseas scholar, he will work as a civil servant - making policies that affect every Singaporean's life. Would you want a racist scholar to make decisions that affect you and your family?

What he writes is his own problem.Freedom of speech, as long as he doesn't go and carry out his views, I'm alright with that.

However, he must be professional at work.And who amongst us can safely say that he or she has not had any racist thoughts before?IF he wasn't a PSC scholar, this issue wouldn't be raised right?

Though racism is not a right thing, we should not use it as an excuse to deny another person his own views, not matter how bad.

Racism exists in all societies, including ours. However, Chua Cheng Zhan is supposed to be one of the most intelligent students in his cohort and studying overseas on a government scholarship. He cannot give the excuse that he did not write in his own persona when he entered the racist blog entries. If so, he can use the same excuse to exonerate himself from any wrong statement or action that he commits in future when he becomes a senior civil servant. It is most unbecoming of a PSC scholar to make such remakrs. He can be taken to court in America for such remarks.

Shame on Chua Cheng Zhan! PSC should issue him a stern warning.

There is no place for remarks on race or religion in multi-racial and multi-religious Singapore society. Racial fault lines are very fragile. Chua is trading on very thin ice.

Racism is fine. It boils down to personal belief. BUT there is no place for racism in the Civil service. None at all. I would have taken his scholarship away.

Racism has no place in multiracial Singapore....scholar or no scholar. He may have the right to voice his opinion but we should mount the most vigorous opposition against his views. If it is necessary to oppose unfounded allegations by taking opposition party politicians to court for defamation, then a slap on the wrist is not enough if someone disseminates the message of hatred against any race.

As a Chinese, I feel nothing but shame for the foolishness and bigotry shown by one of my own. Such persons have no place in Singapore society, not to talk about public service.

The only thing that appears to be true here is that there is a PSC scholar called Chua Cheng Zhan. Pls show us where were the racist remarks made. Were there really racists remarks???

I don't want to join you in condemning anybody, PSC scholar or not, based on hearsay from a person called "Mozart". You should actually tell us your real name, to be fair to Chua Cheng Zhan.
