Job Opportunities in Singapore

I’m an undergrad currently studying far far away. I graduate in 3 years time and I’m starting to wonder if there is a place for me in Singapore. Home is home and though i do not mind working away from home for a few years, but i still want to come back when I’m ready to settle down. Many of you might scoff at that but I love it in Singapore. But i’m starting to worry. Is there a place for me?

Hello Farmer Brown,

Whether there will be jobs for returning overseas graduates or not depends on how entrepreneurial and creative now is the government.

Many past policies of government are too restrictive, or only concentrating on controls and not facilitation. Such narrow policies benefitting only government's own efficiencies and report cards do not lead to more jobs.

There must be big changes to all these narrow and restrictive policies like the self-promoting or self-benefitting tax-and-recover charging of all fees. There should be facilitation of citizens and businesses to create a more pro-business and pro-people to grow future business.

Many of us in our own different ways are posting here to make government understand that a knowledge-based new world needs every citizen as elite and talent to contribute to all areas of excellence and competitiveness and not just a few connected to their limited network.

But people must understand and support good corporate governance too as without people showing an interest sadly nothing will change.

I'm majoring in Business with a concentration in the field of Entrepreneurial Studies. Which industry? I have yet to decide but at the moment i'm more inclined to F&B much to the discouragement of most of those around me.

3 years! Things change. What we say now don't apply in 6 months. Maybe there's just too much earthquake or volcano erupt and sink Singapore... then you don't even need to consider Singapore. Very Happy

Everything will go up when the casino is running... with the FTAs being signed all over the world, singapore's legs are spreading wider and wider and setting up the casino is like getting a new boob job....

but with the govt wooing foreign talent.. are there enough schemes to ensure its locals have fairground? Is foreign talent even "better"?

err.. i'm of the opinion that Singapore is liken to a small goldfish bowl.

How many goldfish, can one put into a small goldfish bowl, before it too overcrowded, and they die one by one.

They also working like hell ! And they all end-up coming to Singapore to work ! Take away your top cream jobs and getting fat salary of $15,000 per month !
And it is equal to a PM in Malaysia !

If I am a foriegn from AH MO country. If I am a China national. If I am a India National. If I am a Malaysian. I tell you ! I will like to work in Singapore.

Low-tax. High exchange rate. Government is keeping a blind eye on what the citizen want. I will love the PAP government !

Singapore citizen is the best in the world. The citizen suffering in debts, Going bankcrupt. And still they don't know what is happening when they retrench, jobless.

its basically an employers world out there.. unions here are weak.. no protection for the employees.. so if you work for others be prepared to be exploited to the max..

It is inevitable. Singaporeans shall be hearing more of retrenchment news till most, if not all, of the labour-intensive company departments have been outsourced to other countries in the region. If you ever drive through the industrial estates of Tuas, you'll notice more empty buildings and quieter activity. Singapore industry's heyday is past.

However, things are looking up on another side. The retrenched workers could go for re-training courses as croupiers since Singapore is now aspiring to be the Las Vegas of South-East Asia.
