Why is there a need to vote??

We managed to agree on something here Something's gotta be done and it starts with us.With our votes. We make up the country and our voices and views must c...

People vote,to have a choice in the government which rules over them, to make a change in their government , to see certain policies change/start , or re-adjusted to make it better , and it is like giving them a report card for what they have done..

Vote or no vote, its all the same...
Why bother to conduct elections...

i don't understand..
It just seems to me that they are acting in front of USA government just to show their "democratic spirit.."

oldbreadstinks SG

because people like to think that they’re making the important decisions?

Voting is for show only, IMO.

A side note, I am sure even in USA, even if they practice 1st-past-the post, incorporate elements of preferential voting, unlike us.

Wayang show.Either be the cast , the crew or the audience.Guess who has a say in the script ? Not the audience.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Give yourself a pat.

so we can have a national holiday that day

...so that the next ASEAN chair country could learn a thing or two from the glorious example of democracy that is Singapore.

However, with members of the Singapore opposition aging, discredited, exiled, or just plain ineffectual, voting does really seem redundant.

We have no moral right criticising Burma if we don't get our own house in order.

Very well said !!! Laughing

Even so, we have it better that the Burmese. Many of them are dirt-poor while a number of us can revel in luxury. I can bet with you that some villages have no Net access, let alone clean water.

Bravo.... I personally find those PAP-heads to be some of the biggest hypocrites on earth.

Anyway, voting is just one big show to supposedly 'prove' to the democratic nations that we're one of them when in reality we're not.

How can we be really democratic when those PAP-heads keep taking our opponents to court?

How can we be democratic when we practice gerrymandering? Those PAP-heads keep changing the electoral boundaries such that wards with high opposition tendencies get absorbed into other wards (think Anson, Cheng San, etc).

Heck, how can we be democratic when I can't even say all this out loud in public without being charged with 'disturbing the peace' and 'undermining social security'?!?!?

iveco SG

There was also Eunos GRC. In fact, Aljunied GRC today comprises elements of the old Eunos and Cheng San GRCs. The WP team chose to stand for elections in Aljunied in 2001 and were disqualified under suspicious circumstances. Very likely the MIW realised they could lose this ward and came up with some desperate move to ensure a walkover there.

It's one thing to say that human nature makes one want to keep his or her own place, but if we as humans have a predilection towards such a notion, then it's up to a Constitution to keep check over the baser instincts of Man.Though a law made by man, but to change it requires a bigger majority.

We need a Bill of Rights and empowerment of the Constitution.Agendas have no place in a nation's future.

Glad you caught the irony in the earlier post.

If they do, just say you were echoing the Koka Noodles ads.

Well, whatever it is, just make sure that those of you lucky enough to be in constituencies that are not walkovers, go out and vote for the opposition(even if they are wearing shorts and slippers and talk like loan sharks. the idea here is to send your message to the ruling party) instead of staying at home and complaining that voting is useless. Who knows, it might make a difference if enough of us do it!

fudgester SG

I'll be frank: we should not vote for the opposition just to spite the PAP-heads. As hypocritical and non-democratic those PAP-heads are, I certainly do not want a psuedo-loanshark clown like CSJ becoming Prime Minister.

This post doesn't contradict what I really think about those PAP-heads. Yes, they trample on democracy and show the finger in the face of freedom. However, just because they do so it doesn't mean that we can anyhow spite them and put power in the hands of clowns who can't even spend five minutes on national television without embarassing themselves.

Even if the PAP-heads become fully democratic and allow absolutely free elections I'll still vote for them if the opposition stinks big time. If and when the opposition can convince me that they can do a better job (CST is one such person.... but he's too old and he's only one person), my vote goes to them.

If I have to choose between two evils, then I'll have to choose the lesser one..... even if it means keeping the PAP-heads in power.

lwflee SG

You are forgetting one thing: The chances of the opposition gaining enough seats in parliament to win the election is next to zero. Therefore, by voting opposition, you are not removing PAP from power. What it does is to erode PAP's dominance and to make it easier to get rid of them when the time comes.

And i think too little credit has been afforded to Mr. Chee here. No doubt one of the reasons for this is his lack of PR skills and personality. However, i have no doubt that it is also due to the media having influenced perceptions of him. I have read some of this articles b4 and he certainly doesn't write like a clown.
