Hi Guys,
The Saturday News Paper reported that there is an increase in smuggling of
contraband cigarettes. I do understand and appreciate the good intention of the Government.I think they might overlook other factors while upon deciding to increase the cigarettes taxes.
1.The increase in smuggling contraband cigatrettes.
2.More smokers going in to Neigbourhood country to get cigarettes.
The chances of crime rate increases due to poor economy.
3.People taking the chance to earn big bucks by producing counterfie
cigarettes.This is health harzard .
4. ..........Etc.............
Instead of getting smokers to quit smoking,they might even get themselves into a worse health condition.

Have anyone of you ever stop to think how these smokers are a social nusiance? Look anywhere, chances are you see cigeratte butts. There are those who throw lighted butts into dustbin and caused it to burnt, or give out foul smelly burnt smell. They leave the smelly smoke in the lift after they leave making it un-bearable to the next user who do not smoke. They choke the urinating bowl and expect cleaners to clear for them.

They gather at restuarant toilet to puff the hell in it making it impossible for non-smoker to use. They also did the same at the stair lobby and no one can use it even if it is a floor down or up. Once our office building was on fire and the whole building have to be evacuated all because of some inconsiderate smoker throw the lighted butt into the fire man lift that happen to have rubbish which was being cleared by the cleaner of the day...

They blow smoke into your direction when you try to have a decent meal in the coffee shop or hawker centre. then they leave the disgusting butt on the table for the next user to clear. I only wish I government could do more then just raising the prices and passing law against it in public place. They must get more law enforcer to ensure that the ban stay and smokers punished for flouting the law.. They should ban cigarettes altogether !!! Twisted Evil

To stop smoking, all should start from education. Schools should educate student from young. I'm sure this will help a lot. How to educate? Don't tell me that our freaking gov cannot think of it.
Till to day, none of the schools doing that; is a total failure of our freaking government!!! Mad

In fact, there are many people picking up smoking in School. I am not a smoker, but I have seen many students smoking even in their school uniforms !! Today, I was at the SGH. There were sign saying " This is Hopistal area, no smoking please" or something like this... But there were two men and 1 woman smoking next to the sign and the securitys there do nothing about it !! If I don't have to take care of my mother, I would had walk up and asked them what the [email protected]#$ use of putting sign there and don't enforce it. I bring this up because this is exactly how the government behave ... put sign and expect people to follow the rules and no one is there to enforce it .... What a let down .....!!!

to begin with i am not a smoker. banning smoking is unfair to the smokers. you cannot compare smoking to chewing gum as one is addictive while the other is not. price increase is unfair too. what about old folks in 50s or 60s? they have been smoking for decades. it is very difficult, if not impossible to quit.

the government should enforce rules or increase fines to make smokers pay for their irresponsible behaviours.

The biggest problem is the Government don't enforce it !!! They put up sign and expect people to obey. As u say, it is addictive, so when the yearn comes, what to do ? Since nobody enforce it, don't care just smoke lor ... The Government is the biggest culprit here ...

Better give up smoking.
My relative, a heavy smoker just got diagnosed with lung cancer, advanced stage.
There was no sign except for a cough that didn't go away.
Now he has to go for chemo treatment & his suffering is terrible- he has many needles poking him & breathless all the time.
The doc gave him 2- 3 mths, the most till end of this yr.
Better quit cos the suffering is terrible.

Many people say giving up is difficult.. Wonder if they try. My dad was a chain smoker. 17 years ago, diagnosed with throat cancer. He was 71 years old. Doctor said difficult for old man to give up, just asked him to cut down. When doctor told him to cut down, he knew something was wrong but we never tell him cancer. All he did was on that day throw the balance cigerattes away and never touch a single stick since. He died of old age last year at 88 years old. Giving up smoking was like so simple. He did it... I am very sure many younger people here should able to do better.... Like Gerry say, better to give up smoking ... don't be a nusiance to the society and more importantly to your family and loves one ......

i was speaking from a smoker's point of view when i said ban cigarettes outright like they banned chewing gum. honestly i won't feel the urge to smoke if NO ciggies are being sold here, or even if i have the urge, i will just lan lan and do something else to keep my mind off it. but by increasing the price, it does little to stop people from smoking. if it's sincerely for health reasons that the govt increased the price, then please, go all the way without trying to fatten the govt coffers.

of cos, this is just my opinion as a smoker, not speaking for ALL smokers.
