The parliament is now debating President's address.What the presdent said is probably prepared by the PM.The PM leads the govt and not the president.Why can't the govt be more truthful?

The MPs wouldn't debate this topic.We can debate it in this forum.Perhaps there won't be a debate because there is no objection to my viewpoint.

It looks like a lot of protocol behind all the parliament proceedings.

Certain MPs will always speak more often usually in justifications of existing practices or policies.

The ministers knowing what questions will be asked in advance will reply from certain prepared policy positions. If there is enough time left, some backbenchers will be given an opportunity to speak. Who will be welcome or allowed to speak after the ministers' replies? When will the whip be lifted to allow spontaneity of views and feedbacks or debates. It looks like the views are always known to the ministers who will preempt all the questions asked or to be asked.

This format of parliament proceedings is probably too old and does not keep up with the time. If ministers do not allow spontaneity or free questioning, how to get real in representing all the forumers' and people's views and aspirations in parliament.

Parliament needs to think out of the box for a change. Laughing

They should have a “live” meet the people session instead. Hear it from the people on the ground, answer their questions. Do they have the guts to do that ? Whats goes on in the parliament is just a show. Why waste time watching.

As long as the debates are confined to mental duels, I’m in favor of a more adverserial, on your feet kind of Parliamentary debate.Where questions are not submitted in advance and answers must be given promptly and concisely.

They should broadcast a live video webcam feed over the internet
and the local net users can preregister, tune in and engage
interactively with them live!

That's thinking and doing out of the box!

But I don't think they have the guts to do it despite the technology is
readily available.

Live engaging is very gruelling while the sit back, listen and switch-off attitude
is so much more relaxed and rewarding.

Heh! Some of you are suggesting that there be an open question time where the public is able to question ministers directly.

I doubt our ministers have the ability, talent and wit to be able to survive such a grilling without resorting to the "We know Best" and "Oh - Watch it, you're approaching an OOB marker there!" argument. Hell, they might even resort to name calling! "Quitters" anyone?

Simply put, i think their abilities as statesmen is suspect; and i think they know their limitations too.

PM's statement was read by, his excellency, the Presdient.Shouldn't PM read his statement himself?Surely the President can prepare his own speech to address the Parliament.

If autocracy wants to have its way all the way, it is only logical that it should hold its own and not use the president to do the good speeches in parliament.

After all, if autocracy has its way to build a society it might as well have autocracy all the way not under any disguise of some pseudo-democracy.

LKY like Doc M has a cloud of adversaries behind them, they have friends, influence and commands respect but they also have a truck load of international enemies that does not like them and will go against them in policy makings. So nothing changed, but at least we have a more gentle international image, and hey, Malaysia and Singapore's relationship got better. Maybe after retirement, they often meet up for la kopi. It was reported that MPs 'debated' a motion of thanks to the President for his address to the Parliament.

Motion of thanks also require debates?!Was there any MP objected to the motion so it required a debate?No, but they 'DEBATE'!

How to debate the motion of thanks?

Supporters of the motion can say the Parliament should thank the President out of courtesy or because he did PM a favour.Opponests of the motion can say the President shouldn't be thanked because he draws a high salary from public fund.

Do you know how MPs debate the motion?They didn't 'debated' as i say.In fact,they didn't debate the motion.
