high cost of living. just like u spend over a million in total to get ur kid from P1 and to Uni just to get paid the salary of a diploma grad. and if dats not enough, u have Indians and PRCs coming over to snatch your child's ricebow and they are considered elites and are put on a pedestal although both your child and the Indian/PRC are both Uni grads.

MOE keep on changing things mth after mth, yr after yr....students don't get frustrated, parents will.

GST keep on increasing, by the time your child reach teen age, the GST will be around/at least 10% and dat is on top of the already high cost of living and GST will not stop increasing.

In a span of lesser than 10 years, a bowl of noodles jumped from 1.50 -> 2.50, a jump of 67%....wats more to come ?

transport fares also goes up and up and up even before u really get used to the last price hike.

u have experienced it, while yours is still just the tip of the iceberg, do u want your kid to experience it when u know its gonna be much worse than yours ?

Its better to teach someone how to fish or let them be able to catch fish easier than give them fish to keep htem going when they are at the brink of death.

I think birth rates are dropping because as more of the SG population become more educated, they want a better life for their kids! Lets face the harsh reality of SG.

In the "old" days, most parents don't care about how many kids they have cause they don't plan for their kids future! Nowadays it is different. With rising costs of living in Singapore, only RICH people can afford to have many kids. If an average family has many kids, most of them will lost out in life.

As the risk of sounding MCP, having gals are still okie since they will eventually get married off. But what about the boys. Lets face it! They will DEFINETELY lose out in SG. They got less chance to go better schools, some have to start work young, slog to pay for school fees etc! If they complain then some more WELL OFF citizens will just call them WHINERS and look down on them! Have more kids for what!!??? To let them SUFFER!?!?!

The FACT is that most families will only and can only afford one or two kids to be able to give them a proper advantage in life.

Children do not ask to be born into this world especially SG. My message to parents is that if you cannot afford it, then save them and yourself the grief.
Wanting to have many kids and expecting them to lead an average life does not cut it. Sooner or later, they will SEE the difference between the HAVES and the HAVE NOTS!

This is a perfect example of how children, even teenagers and adults, expect everything in life to be given to them! Must have this have that... but must be given cannot even worked for... its a must have and have not...

Grow up, children all have a fair start with life, its just up to them to work hard for it. In the states, as soon as the kids turn 18, they're almost practically thrown out of the house to go work or study. No money to study, most students take up personal student grants or look for a scholarship, they work part time at night to pay rent and for food...

Here, you expect everything, must have and have nots right?

True true. In Singapore, Children do not really have a fair start with life. Born with a golden spoon, you have maids taking care of you, tutors to guide you through everything, parents to shower you with toys, computers to provide you with games(uh, parents to supply computers first), etc.

I tell you, if its possible to get a gf for them with money, they'll definately arrange it.

Everything is planned out for their children, so much so that they don't have their own life anymore, and then they start rebelling.

The US cannot really be compared with SG in many levels. Here we are really are very conservative. Try calling your dad by your first name, and see if he whaps you.

The reason why they leave at 18 can also be attributed to the fact that lodging is generally cheaper and more available there? In Singapore, you should know how much it costs to get a flat ... unless you can find studio apartment for students or young adults lor. Its just not feasible over here.

Talking about gf, you want your parents to choose a gf for you??? If you're happy with that go ahead. You have the freedom to choose a gf, just up to you to go out and look for one.

US to SG, I was just taking about how the kids are more independent. Look you complain about oh I don't have this, I want this and that... but you just have to work for it. It is feasible, there are scholarships out there, there's cheap rent out there, if they really want to do so, they can do it instead of complaining about it...

Unless you're born into a royal family, but take Prince Charles heir to the throne, he too has worked and studied... everyone has to work in life... that gives us the right to choose our own path in life.

The post that i just wrote about is what i feel parents are doing.

I'm sure US kids are more independant because they were brought up as such. For SG kids, we seem to be sheltering them a lot. Look at the recent fusses about schools. Lets not forget the incident about principal leaving cause tapped book on student's head?

It is feasible to move out i guess, but who, unless they are truly very independent, or dislike their parents very much so, would want to move out and start a new life ahead, alone?

Hmm, i think we've always been brought up depending on someone. I for sure, am definately not independent enough to want to move out so quick, and that's speaking from an average chinese family.

Yes I do agree its not customary for a child to leave home. But I do know of quite a few people who like or prefer to stay outside, of course with a room mate to share costs.

think it’s a societal evolution thingy. in the 60s, govt said dun have so many kids, work hard better, earn lots of money best. so the pple told their kids, when u grow up, must earn lots of money. that became the main focus. now govt says want to have kids. how? when we were young we were told to make lots of money, we weren’t told to have kids.

this post reminds me of the kid who never wiped his own arse till he was 13

anyway about sheltering our kids, i recently visited my old neighbourhood for a game of soccer, and i noticed that the swings are all gone, only left the stands, my first thought was "all broken?"
then i remembered what broken swings looked like when i was a kid
and i also remember that some dipshi.t parent wrote to the papers to complain about swings being dangerous and that they should be taken off
why can't these parents just lock up their kids or something, wouldn't that be safer?

It's just too expensive and we're too poor to have kids.
Don't blame couples. And financial incentives don't help at
all - they essentially give out loans with huge interests to be paid
back later in life.
