Wires found cut in cockpit of MAS plane
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian police are investigating a third case in
12 months of suspected sabotage involving a Malaysia Airlines (MAS)
plane after wires were severed in an Airbus A330 aircraft.
Police said yesterday that the plane was grounded at Kuala Lumpur's
international airport on Tuesday after ground crew found some
electrical wires inside the aircraft had been cut. The plane was
being prepared for a flight to Bangkok.
Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rasman Hussin said the police were not
treating the sabotage as terrorism but suspected someone inside
MAS.
'No, there's no connection with terrorism,' said the deputy chief
of the Criminal Investigation Department.
'We are trying to get evidence but it is difficult. It is not a
security breach. We suspect an inside job and we're trying to
narrow down (a list of suspects).'
He added that the police were combing through lists of all MAS
staff with access to aircraft.
MAS said it had stepped up security again after the latest incident
but declined to comment further.
AC Abdul Rasman declined to give details on the severed
wiring.
The Star newspaper said yesterday the cut wires were under an
instrument panel below the flight captain's seat. The flight
systems had indicated a malfunction.
Two MAS planes were grounded last year after wires were found to
have been tampered with - an Airbus bound for Perth, Australia, in
October and a Boeing jet bound for Bombay, India, in November,
Malaysian media reported.
Police detained and questioned 14 MAS maintenance employees after
the first incident late last year.
But police said yesterday that they had yet to identify a suspect.
