The Msia proposal is for a curved bridge for cars. Only the train section will be "opened up" as and when required for ships to pass, since trains cannot possibly make the incline given the short distance of the gap. That's why ppl called it the harp design.. 1 straight track + 1 curved road.

Let's not forget that demolishing the causeway = diversion of pipeline hor.

Actually.. the issue is that the existing Causeway is not the cause of the jams. It's the CIQ on both sides that causes the backlog. In my opinion.. the causeway is fine. If water quality is an issue. then... dig small culverts underneath certain sections will resolve that.

Even if got bridge, is the water deep enuf for container ships to pass through?
If got chance take a look at the waters between Kranji dam and LCK jetty.. it's almost like a mud plain! At best I think is only passable by a small coastal feeder vessel, like those in HK, carrying less than 10 containers. So... I think.. bridge proposal not meaningful. CIQ more important.

The causeway bridge is not practical and will not serve the purpose as intended by Malaysia because the channel would be too shallow and height clearance too restricted for larger vessels.

The more practical options are many. Both governments should study options like enclosing the whole straits like the future Kallang Basin to provide a source of future water supply for both countries.

Another idea is to build underground tunnels to link major monorail and undersea cities which according to reliable sources are nowadays possible. Undersea cities will help to save on land reclaiming costs. Rolling Eyes

Are you from SMRT of government to earn more money? Even though if we able to get the future link to malaysia and further, who is going to bear the cost for the everyday transit of the Causeway? Its the citizen of singapore and JB not the government or SMRT!!!!!

Yup, only small vessel can pass through. Not those tanker or container liner. Futhermore it is hazzardous if ship are that close to mainland. pollution, accident like sleeping captain knocking into the bridge...etc.

imagine more than 10 storey high of vessels passing on the spore-malaysia straits that is so small and narrow for them... the view...... so scaring....

Nope, not from SMRT or government, but just a kay-po. Singapore could gain an imaginary hinterland up north all the way to China if fast monorail becomes a reality.

Mind you, our small island will no longer be that small if it is well connected by fast trains to many northern cities and countries within hours.

If our small island is connected to cheaper labor due to mass travels our underground MRT will become feasible. The road causeway can be kept for heavy transport. Such fast speed train will offer greater incentive to Thailand to trade through with more countries through our sea terminal and Trade will grows with Northenn China. Rolling Eyes

Cheap air tickets compared to bus or train, depending on your destination that is. Say if you want to go to KL, taking train or bus is definitely cheaper. Furthermore, the bus or train fare is consistent throughout most of the year, whereas air tickets fluctuates and does not include airport tax, insurance, security tax and fuel surcharge. If you talk about LCC, the later you book your tickets, the more expensive it gets.

I think it is not so straight forward.

Just look at the amount of land owned by Malaysian government through the ownership of KTM (the railway line and stations).

Malaysian Government will not give up the Singapore land it owns easily. The price is not good enough. She will not let MRT into JB which will then lower the cost of the railway land she holds.

The daily traffic on the Causeway can be eased by improving the KTM line into Singapore, such as electrifying it, etc.

Singapore government will not allow Malaysian government / KTM to improve the railway line to Singapore by electrifying it etc. The more improvement is done the more difficult to remove them in time to come.

The government is having a headach in finding way to get back the land.

Talking about KTMB land in Singapore, I think it will be a long time before Malaysia will handover the land ownership to Singapore. Recently, the Malaysian Government announced that it will refurbish the railway tracks in Singapore.

KTMB has also announced plans to introduce a new Shuttle Service between Singapore and JB.

If Singapore keeps developing its MRT infrastructure including one that will serve woodlands or JB, the KTMB lands will be in a doldrums.

Sooner or later, KTMB will want to exchange its land with lands near to MRT woodland station which no doubt could become more and more valuable overtime. This strategy will be enough to make KTMB want to exchange its lands. Laughing
