Taiwanese Urged to Boycott Singapore

sigh, we singaporeans quite full of ourselves. the china chinese criticised us, we say thats becos the china chinese this and that, the taiwanese wanna boycott us, we say thats becos the taiwanese this and that. have u all ever wondered maybe we singaoreans are the ones collectively at fault, that we can piss so many ppl off? instead of going on the defensive, why not think about it? not that we have to please everyone or anyone, but for ever reaction, there is a cause, and the question is, what about us that creates such a cause? think people, dun just blindly and mindlessly go on the defensive again.

It is easy to form our impressions on taiwan by looking at their media, parliament and even movies as a gauge to how they are like when it comes to defence and strategic issues.

it is true that they make their parliament out to be a joke and their movies stupid but they have survived longer than we had as a nation and with a bigger threat for a longer time. it could really be just pure sensationalism how they reacted to Lee's visit but as some of u pointed out, they have less and less friends. if someone is cornered a country that is supposed to be your 'friend', i.e. u have been playing host to for many years say what Lee said, it only increases their sense of isolation. Whether it is mere sensationalism or not, it does spell a threat to taiwan if Singapore really meant what it said about Taiwan. we should'nt read them as being drama-mama. their sense of threat is definitely greater than how we feel about the china-taiwan issue.

let us not be too critical of the taiwanese, less we find that one day we are trapped between two unfriendly countries and we need friends from afar to affirm our independence too.

if political leadership has been a little more astute, it would have recognised that both China and taiwan would have used our visit for political mileage. we can't really blame them for being hyper-sensitive given the historical baggage the two coutnries carry since we are not them and don feel it. we should have been more astute to prevent what we cannot solve.

my mum is a taiwanese, i was born there, i served my NS in singapore now holding a pink IC.

In my impression, taiwan is a much more democratic society than most SEA countries. Yes, the parliament is a joke, the media is sentationalizing most news, but wait till you see the news in China (i am base in shanghai now), then you might prefer taiwan news.

As someone who worked in the media industry before, i must say this, if it is shown on TV as news, don't believe it wholesale...even if its CNN. taiwanese are some of the most warming people i have met.

In the first place, LHL should have the political astuteness to know that he is just a small player in the Political Stage of this Big World; and what is the worth of his private visit, which would have been just as well served by sending perhaps more capable, experienced and discerning persons than himself - on the World's Political Stage - such as Professor Tommy Koh, or some senior ranking Government official or Civil Servant such as our UN ambassador Mr Kishore.

It is just stupid of LHL to say that his supposedly PRIVATE VISIT was merely to gauge the depth of the minds of the essential players on both sides of Taiwanese Politics - concerning their views of Taiwanese independence.

His remarks at the National Day Rally help to save his own skin with China, but was an insult to the Taiwanese, who have stood by Singapore since independence - by helping in the defense of Singapore with seconded air force pilots during the early days of independence, and continue to contribute to Singapore's National Defense with military training ground in Taiwan.

Both China and Taiwan are our friends, and although their quarrels will have very wide implications if it ever come to blows, it is too presumptious of LHL that his opinion is of any value if it is formed by his own personal visit to Taiwan, or that any world leaders will seek his views at all - when he is so early into the office of being Singapore's PM.

There are many important issues in Singapore alone to keep him busy for the first year in Office, does he need to take on more World issues at the same time that may cause his old sickness to resurface ?

glad to see others standing up for logic and sense. anyways heres another thought. China is a giant, Taiwan ain’t small either. If they come to blows, Singapore being as tiny as we are, certainly dun wanna be caught inbetween, least we be crushed between the 2 of them.

before LHL went to taiwan, who knows who is he? no one. at least in china, not many people know who he is (i am in shanghai now)

to me, its a gimmick to make people know him as he take over, what he really did in taiwan did not really mattered actually...be it he just went there for a bite.

Well, I believe they are not the only one who would KBKB, I am sure everyone would do the same too.

Let us all be rational here, politicians and anyone are alike no matter where you come from. Once their country is being bashed, they will react accordingly, I'm sure our minister would do the same went someone commented our country.

So let not be too quick to judge others, lets look at ourself first. 'cos it easier to judge others than to be judged. We are into globalisation so whoever is in a fight, those who are in connection to either parties would naturally be "involved" into the fight. Taking side would be the last resort....
