fkh SG

I notice many people join SIM after they failed to gain admission to NUS/NTU/SMU ..

Can SIM degree give you Division One post in Civil Service?

No, I don't think so...

Re-define talents in accord with realities and every problem in Singapore will be sorted out nicely.

Real talents in Singapore are the thousands who care to apply what they have learned (1 skill is good enough) rather than the erudites with 1000 more who might not be able to use one skill at all.

Not sure if SIM degree can help get into DIV I in civil service. But I think difficult lah.

So many people in NTU & NUS, they eat grass if SIM also chap one leg. Now somemore in Changi coming an foreign challenger, UNSW. all the more, no fight lah.

Anyway, SIM offers mostly arts & mgmt degrees, many private organizations still can accept lah, unless that interviewer stick stamp on the eyes and only see NTU & NUS up.

BTW, SIM degrees also degree what, so no need to frown about it. Civil Services also no IRON RICE BOWL alreadi.

Ah Ma SG

u mean SIM open uni
or SIM tthose UOL, RMIT

genxal SG

NUS and NTU no big deal. If u r a scholar in the Civil Svc, well, thats something.
See the papers today, quoting the PM: "PSC scholarships are awarded 'so that the Government can build up potential public service leaders, not entrepreneurs'." Dont we all noe already, top-notch leadership positions will be (and are) filled up by scholars.
No scholarship? wat abt an Ivy League degree?

2004Lancer SG

well PM Goh is trying to re-affirm those scholars not to feel unstable and lose confidence after LKY had commented that there are too many talented scholars who are under utilising their potential.....many are cut out to be entreprenuers....

think that comments must have caused unhappiness among those scholars and they are afraid they are losing scholars to foreign lands....

after those comments, i believe some had left...or preparing to leave.....and PM Goh's speech today is to hold some of them back.....

my friend from SIM, graduated from RMIT, she applied for a job as a teacher, but MOE tell her they can only pay her poly pay, cos SIM not recognised, I thot SIM got gah'men linkage?

SIM graduates will find it difficult to convince the authority to change its present pro-scholar policy. Assumptions and presumptuousness are capricious thing.

Obviously, more "Sim Wong Hoo" entrepreneurs and more professionals have to be produced before authority will bat the eyelid on pro-academician erudite learing.

Grades is now the in-thing. A mixer of grade/practicality should be adopted.

Singapore did not understand that industrialization itself is not the only way to success. Now is the third wave knowledge age. Applied learning is superior to academic high-grade high-flyer approach when offices and factories began to see the difference between academic and practical.

Through mass participation in knowledge application happening in Poly, ITEs practices are changing in private sector with readiness to employ such graduates when it comes to professional works - adoption of workable processes is essential condition. Continuous upgrading up the academic road is on the way out. Embarassed

No matter what they say, scholarships only given to those with straight As & employers esp. Civil Service will always look at grades & the U. u attend. That is why the parents & kids are so stressed to get the As.

creepycrawlie SG

Precisely. There is actually no big deal about working in the civil service. I think what matter most is the money and recognition.

For example:
SIM grad probably gained employment in the private sector and got promoted rapidly to some regional director in a big firm based on his/her capabilities.
And another NTU/NUS grad worked in the civil service and got promoted to a grade B officer after a while too.

So which do you think people will look upon as being more successful?
Do you know that private sector is paying better than the civil service at the end of the day?
