Viper, my dear old boy,
Re: using husbands as a ticket out of Singapore. From a purely
objective, secular liberal viewpoint, taken only at the individual,
non-policy level, I would have to agree that if that's what 'floats
their boats', there's no cause for us to complain.
But you see, this thread is discussing an actual government policy
of encouraging interbreeding (maybe you have problems with this
term, but it is essentially what the government is talking about,
cutting away all the press-friendly phraseology) between
Singaporeans and foreigners. This policy is being motivated by a
desire to increase Singapore's population.
That being the case, it is vital to point out that the tendency,
from numerous accounts and from my own personal experience, is for
local women, in particular, who marry foreign men to leave
Singapore for the husband's home country. You yourself conceded
this possibility when you fell back on a 'whatever floats their
boat' argument.
These points are all relevant because it demonstrates that the
government policy we are now addressing could very well be
self-defeating...instead of having more Singaporeans through
local-foreign marriages, the Singaporean spouses migrate, and we
end up with fewer Singaporeans! Complete backfire! Time for a
RETHINK, as the saying goes.
Haha...very droll re: courting Caucasian women from Australia.
While I appreciate your concern for my social life, I would have to
say that I haven't ever been tempted by Australian women (not even
Kylie!), and even if I were to migrate to Perth I would want to
marry a Singaporean woman (well, a nice, sensible one at least) and
bring her with me. My girlfriend would probably suggest to you that
she fits my requirements in that regard.
