The direction that Kyas took in bringing about the topic of one's Diet Consideration into a highly charged discussion on Religion was also uncalled for.

Such a line of argument is symptomatic of current distorted HUMAN interpretation of the ancient religious teachings.

This was highlighted in a recent Singapore Strait Times report which featured a young Malay girl (6 or 7 years old) eating noodles with chopsticks, and she was chided by her class teacher for committing "Haram" - a Major Sin in Islam - for eating with chopsticks and not with her hands.

Such is the stupidity of human vanity displayed by "Current Day" Human, in trying to be cleverer than the original Ancient Author of the Holy Book written in ancient time.

You are right in what you have posted, and certainly have a right to your position taken in your views of religion.

I respect your position taken, and have admired your calm effort in explaining your points.

However, I find it difficult to understand the reason for you to bring up the matter of food that cuts into another person's cultural and dietary preference.

It moves the debate from one of "religious-politics" into the area of "cultural-social" preferences that may or may not accentuate the differences in racial dietary preferences.

Your effort in identifying the molecular and chemical composition about pork and its effect was unnecessary, and was probably deemed as insulting to the community that prefer pork as their main diet of enjoyment.

Much could have been said about the eating of beef (mad cow diseases), or mutton (side effect of body odour) by the other communities.

Where will this debate about personal or communal choices lead us ? Is a "beef or mutton eater" more intelligent than a "pork eater" ?

This is my point in the Topic that was closed, in that Present Day Human has tried to interpret the Ancient Written Records of the Ancient Man, without understanding the events of those Ancient Period; and are trying to "enforce" ancient practices on Life in the Twenty First Century.

Life as seen in the areas of cultural, social, political, economic, and now even dietary activities.

I believer it wasnt actually Kyas that brought up that point...If you read the posts I think you'll find that it was "stupidissmart" who introduced the aspect of forbidden meats.

I too am guilty of prolonging focus on that point. However I never expected it to grow so out of hand! All I wanted was a reason why the pig is viewed so negatively by Islam. If I have accidently caused any bad feelings then I readily apologise...

P.S. Since we're already here...does anyone know why Islam doesnt like pork? Is it really actually a public health decision based on how dangerous it is to eat pork or is there some other reason?

I agree with you Atobe. This is yet another example of misunderstanding of the fundamental of religion. It is not the teaching is wrong, it is the individual.

Thank you for the kind introduction. After reading most of the articles I find that the world at large REALLY REALLY doesnt know what its talking about when they say they're religious.

Wink Honestly...i can now openly laugh if either Christians or Muslims bad mouth other religions...

BOTH the faiths preach tolerance towards others, in such plain and simple words that I fail to see how any devout follower of either religion can misunderstand...I mean not only religion but also tolerance towards other races...

In retrospect...I really cant understand what went wrong. All the Prophets ever wanted was for everyone in the world to get along and peacefully worship... Laughing What the heck happenned....

So much pain in the world...and the answers are so readily there... especially for supposedly "religious" people...I mean...geez they are literally written down for them to read in a book!!

Perhaps awestruck is searching for the Word of God instructing that pork shall be forbidden from consumption.

At times, I wonder if some cultures and societies forbid their people from consuming pork as a result of their internal prejudice due to unchallenged traditions, or based on the simple abhorrence towards the living habits of the animal itself that cause it to be forbidden from the dining table of the Humans.

I know that is it forbidden. That by itself is very obvious. What Im looking for is a reason why the pig is singled out. The religious texts say dont eat pork cause its dirty. But why just the pig? Does it mean that all pigs are inherently dirty? Even if I kept it in a surgically clean pen?

From what I see, there is all this scientific evidence of why pork is bad. All this scientific evidence is very interesting... but that by itself doesn't, to me, justify why the pig has been singled out...by God himself mind you. Surely lots of other animals are dirty and lots of other animals can pass all kinds of horrible diseases...

If what I understand is true...then there is something inherently evil about a pig? What did the poor animal do? Im looking for something in religion that says, "dont eat the pig for it is singled out from amongst all other creatures because..."

Im searching for that reason...there has to be one, right?

There are many verses in Quran providing guidelines for our consumptions. The following are the most relevant with regard to our discussion. I will provide the translation in Malay since I do not have an English translation. This is to avoid any misleading information due to my poor translation to English:

Al-Anam:145
Katakanlah (wahai Muhammad): Aku tidak dapati dalam apa yang aku wahyukan kepadaku, sesuatu yang diharamkan bagi orang yang hendak memakannya melainkan kalau benda itu bangkai, atau darah yang mengalir, atau daging babi, kerana sesungguhnya ia adalah kotor, atau dilakukan secara fasik, iaitu binatang yang disembelih atas nama selain dari Allah. Kemudian sesiapa yang terpaksa (memakannya kerana darurat) sedang ia tidak menginginkannya dan tidak melampaui batas, maka sesungguhnya Tuhanmu Maha Pengampun, lagi Maha mengasihani

From what I understand from the above verse and related to our discussion, pork is prohibited because simply it is kotor or dirty. So, what do we understand by the word dirty (in relation to food)? It is just simply means unhealthy or bad for health.

But then, at the end of the sentence it was announced that in a situation where a Muslim does not have any other choice, he is allowed to eat pork as long as not too much.

Religion is not only about the good and evil or God and devil. It is a guideline of how one should live.

This post brings us back to my belief that Religion (and the CONCEPT of God) is created by Man, please read my earlier posts on this topic in "Malaysia is a RACIST Country" - if it is still appearing.

Religion is an INTERPRETATION of the Ancient Text written by Ancient Authors in the various Holy Books of Christianity, Islam, Catholicism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and all the major and minor Religions in this world.

It is the ridiculous and pompous self-acclaimed "Modern Day" Human that try to INTERPRETE the 'intended messages' of the Ancient Text written by Ancient Authors in their Ancient Society during their Ancient Moment in Time on this Earth.

In trying to INTERPRETE the meaning of the Ancient Text, some Religions are forcing these Ancient Concepts onto LIFE in the Twenty First Century, that has a totally different sets of environmental factors from the Ancient Moment in Time that the Ancient Text was written.

This is the paradox of Religion being used to guide Modern Man Life Style - that covers his economic, social, cultural, relgious, personal and even dietary activities.

So it seems that the Holy Book of Islam allow a Muslim to consume the prohibitted meat under certain extreme circumstances - this is certainly an eye opener, which I hope is not a start to a new controversy for the Muslim Community.

Anyway this is my views on muslim diet

Why say pork is unhealthy in the first place ? Yes, it is fat, but fat is one of most important nutrient for a healthy well being. Fat is like a water bottle, able for one to store energy and used when needed, such as time when people r fasting... It is just nowsaday peopel have too much fat in their diet, thus giving people the idea tat fatty is unhealthy. From wat I know, pork has the highest value of vitamin B compared to other meat. If u r talking about unhealthy, then mutton is worst because it has higher cholestrol level and It is not any less oily food either.

In times of old, when most people r starving, people r having deficit of fat rather than too much, pork may be their only way of inquiring fat. Why ban them 2002 years ago ?

Anyway best prove is tat Japanese eat pork too, why they lives the longest ?
