Malaysia to get 48 PT-91M main battle tanks

Innocent_Malaysian SG

48 polish PT-91M MBT and 14 support vehicles....partly to be paid in palm oil....
PT-91 is a modernized version of the T-72....
deal to be signed within 3 months

CenturionMBT SG

Only?Could you quote the source?
BTW, i heard that malaysia is building their own tank industry. Is it true?

EXCO SG

I doubt the need of MBTs in the region, and i see this purchase by Malaysia as a “show move”. Any conflict in the region would be limited to built-up areas, and MBT capabilities are severely diminished in that environment. MBTs thrive in open desert or forest areas (Gulf war is a good example). They lack the speed and mobility required in FIBUA combat. Perhaps Malaysia plans to use them as “sentries”, or to borrow a term someone used in a thread here, “point defence” duties, and that also restricts their capabilities.

Innocent_Malaysian SG

i read it from todays paper.....
the deal is not finalized yet....
but the number is 48....
and i heard that ukraine might want to cooperate with msia to build the T-84....

CenturionMBT SG

Ukraine's version of the T-72?

Orcishwarrior SG

Any Guess to Y Malaysia LOV to acquire Military Hardware from EX-warsaw pact states????? Rolling Eyes

CX SG

because they're cheap (compared to western equipment) and they have no qualms who they sell to. of late, they've even thrown in tech transfer into the bargain... not a bad deal actually... and of course, they need the order so desperately that they're actually willing to take palm oil for partial payment Mr. Green

Innocent_Malaysian SG

what MBTs does spore have??

silkmagic SG

Correct me if I am wrong but the tanks that Russian uses are a few years behind western countries tanks and only few are battle proven.

Main Battle Tank are really not useful in the region even in the jungle region. Because of our humid environment, the ground tends to be very soft and cannot take heavy weight.

Do you know how many tanks and heavy vehicles I have seen bogging down in the exercise area or new vegetation. Therefore I think the best type of tank that is suitable for the region are those that are light, fast and pack heavy firepower. Wink

bigballs11 SG

For Your info, spore got hundreds of M60A3/A5 with turrets temporary removed and disguised as AVLB and CEV Shocked

CenturionMBT SG

Officialy dun have.But unofficially. . . . . Mr. Green

bcoy SG

Now that Malaysia have officially announced their purchase of MBTs and MLRS, would Singapore officially acknowlegde the existence of similar weopons in its inventory? What about putting them up for public display?

CX SG

Thats lame… I think its better to keep them guessing.

EXCO SG

Just because our neighbours have them doesn't mean we have to reveal what we have as well. It will give the impression that Singapore is directly challenging its neighbours military strength, and it could also be misinterpreted by neighbouring countries as well. Starting an arms race is the last thing any country would want in this region.

Joe Black SG

Actually if we want some "kick" we should reveal not just what we have, but what we have "built" !!! Smile They can buy from others all they want but Singapore BUILDs them !!!! Smile

But then again, I think good common senses tell us that we should not start an arm race like that. Right now, I am just enjoying the squibbles btween Malaysia and Indonesia... ha ha Smile

silkmagic SG

Do not totally agree that we should reveal what we have as it might allow the enemy an unfair unadvantage over us. As the saying goes "know the enemy know yourself, hundred battle fought, hundred battle won. Just imagine the look of surprise when the enemy encounter the weapons that they never know exist. Haha Very Happy . Anyway it is not the policy of the SAF to annouce every weapon aquistions unlike somebody we know.

bigballs11 SG

Now malaysia self arrogance has itself to blame to stir 2 troublesome large bee hives nest. See if she point finger to the red dot saying we are the cause of all the woes.... Shocked

Innocent_Malaysian SG
