Hie !!
went for the career fair and got quite hooked on the thought of being a female officer.
like to find out if life inside is really as good as they describle?
cant really decide between being an officer or a specialist. specialist seems to do specific technical jobs while officer is leadership rite?
what do officers do , really?
what rank does a fresh deg holder enter into upon acceptance as officer?
if no honours - does it mean i will stay forever in my given rank and retire at 45??
think higher level posts are reserved for scoalrs and honours people rite?

Get your honors first? I feel that its always better to strive for the highest education qualification you can get. SAF restricts promotion above a certain rank. Means without a degree or honors, u might not achieve above “Major.”

The career of an woman officer is pretty restricted in the army as they are usually deployed in the non-combatant roles like instructors or logistics sides.

With these roles, how far do u think u can advance in the army? There's only a handful of woman officers above the ranks Major or Lt-Col.

Qualification-wise...it's the only way you can rise thru' the ranks, sorry, that's how they rate people in SAF.

I guess military women are a rare breed in Singapore. Sure they can earn higher pay in the pte sector. But they have job security workin for gov.

so far i have only come across a LTC female officer (highest i've seen yet) working in manpower.

There are however (to-date) none in the command vocation in infantry/armour/guards units.

Women are not 'required' to serve in a combat vocation. With the closest they could come about is probably in their junior command role. After that, it's just.....plenty of paper pushing and PR.

Seriously, you don't expect a female officer to charge a hill with you right? let's face it, it's just physically too tough for them to do it!!

And i think they raise thru' the ranks because of courses they attended, manpower, logistics, stuff like that. Perhaps their career is already fixed when they enter the service, and if they are to have a COL and above female officer, where do you think she's gonna fit in the ORBAT?

But i'm sure with the amount of women officers that we see in SAF, there's bound to be something good that comes with the job, it's just that we're not aware of it, yet. Smile

hahahahahaaaa....you are right but maybe the ladies don't have to go thru all. There's just too few of them around and the officers don't usually mess around with the ladies in the army, unless they stand to gain something.

I won't generalise about the capability of the women officer corp, but i will share with you guys my experince with women cadets who came up with my training frame to Brunei in '96/97. They were all pathetic in their physical fitness and half way through the navex and climbing Mt B, several of them collapsed and the other male cadets had to take over all their equipment; as well as to stretcher one of them up. Poor cadets. I had to carry one of their SBOs for them up, and they kept complaining that the course was 'not tailored for them as women' i mean...wtf, in war, since when did affirmative action come into place?
These women have to know that when they sign on, they are taking the entire programme as it is. There is no place for watering down training just for them, and if they can't hack it, then don't join the SAF. We can't afford to lower our standards just to be PC.

Obviously these female cadets had not watched / watch w/o absorbing the essense of G.I. Jane ^_^.

Well.....let's hope that bullets and mortars have double standards in a real war. This well help those female cadets alot.

I did, my S4 was a female CPT. Won't call her a bitch lah...too strong a word, but she damn ngiao, everything must be perfect. I've had typed reports thrown back at me not because of grammar and other errors(I always made sure I triple checked), just that she didn't like my phraseology...bah

No Frill's right, I've read that the US and Brit armies have actually "tailored"(ie wimped down) the basic training for the women recruits. These women want to be equals and fight for frontline combat roles yet bitch no end about training when the army tries to prepare them. Yup, like the Taliban and their ilk aer gonna "tailor" their war to suit them. Honestly, some people...

The more I think about it, the more cheesed off i get...i was an OCS instructor and thus i came into contact with a lot of female cadets from G Coy, especially when we train together. DO you guys know that in the SAF the women run SOC in long 4 only?!?!
I gues this might have to do with the fact that our women are not expected to serve in front line positions...the most front line would be [self-censored] so I guess their argument is that they don't have to be as fit as the males.
Still, it irks me to no end that females in Israel are extremely capable of serving side by side with their males, especially in the hazardous roles of AI, or sniper teams.
So much for our stupid S'pore girls who scream for quality and then cannot handle it.
Our govt should not keep spoiling our women folk...
we should all make them do NS, make them compulsary medics, drivers, signallers etc. Of course, they can opt to more 'combat' positions, but they'd have to make the cut.

They should not just be allowed to go to uni and leave us males all serving our time. Afterall, we're all Singaporeans.

Yup.. I had 2 female trainees in my coy too when i was in sispec. Long4 for SOC , and they get to skip several stations too.

However, as u have mentioned, they r not expected to serve front line duties. OCS's juz a route for them to get commissioned.
Once over, they go on to become staff/command personnel.... so really, they do not have to be as fit as males lor.

and i dun think anyone female cadets will pass the course if they have to go thru what the guys go through...

Personally, I DO NOT want to be in the same section/plt with a soldier, that applies camo like make up, screams in the middle of an ambush cos a cockroach crawled in front of her, and I DO NOT want to watch them get raped, abused by anybody, friend or foe.

On a more serious tone, supposing there is a war, and our women SAF personals not been well trainned to handle the trials of war, they might end up beening a liability to male soldiers who would instinctively want to protect female soldiers due to the fact that friendship bonds overight rational thinking. Unless our female soldiers are trainned at the same level as our male soldiers and our male soldiers accepting them as equals, there is no way the current implementation could work.

Agreed. Tough women that can stand combat and its toils are just far (far far) and few (few few) in Singapore. A lot of Singaporean girls are too "xiao jie-ish" and "princess-like" to withstand any form of combat.

My experience with female instructors in SISPEC was interesting, they are more vuglar than the males the amount of verbal abuse were a big pile.

On the other hand, there was a woman pilot instructor. In arty, there are this a few women officers in the command positions. All the women personnel are all behind the frontline by 20km?

In physical strength they are no still no match for men, so the heavies are not for them. Tailored course for the women? There should be. Unless they can be 10 chin ups as upper body strength is a big obstacle for them. My company took 3 female combat recuits and the experience told me leave the women to the service vocation. As we also did a women service course also.
