Trust me, these wont end up in smoke. What WILL end up in smoke is underutilised bus services due to its winding route, and poorly planned train lines.

LTA should have those city driect service run as full day service. even 15-20min it ok as long as the service shown the bus arrival time on a time table provided on the bus stop. maybe saturday half day and sunday and holiday no service. i know maybe LTA afraid MRT lost money but if it is for the people LTA should not have this kind of thinking.

Pls lah. LTA is paying the private operator $500/trip to operate the city direct service. The fares collected per trip won't even hit $100. How to operate full day? LTA buy buses under BSEP u complain. LTA now paying $500 /trip to private operator n you asking LTA to operate full day for CDS?

Hi mr wsy1234, sorry to say it will not happen. There are currently 15 such services and another 5 more are released today for Q1 2016. If implement full day on 1, they need implement on all 20. Cheers. Thanks.

You know the thing about 107M? It is possible to get less than 10 pax boarding from Potong Pasir to Suntec during weekend evenings, then nobody boards at Suntec, and it is quite a fast journey, sometimes within 25 mins, fits every citeria you have mentioned.

Agree with you. Strongly don't recommend full day service. I have observed 518 also goes empty on most trips except for few trips and weekends.

518 DD or SD between Pasir Ris and Tampines get 5-10 pax during off-peak in both directions. I find it quite a waste. When come to CBD also don't have more than 20-25 pax except for few AM and PM trip.

I am confident, by "full day" user wsy1234 meant operating trips on weekends and holidays, which I find completely reasonable.

ESPECIALLY when most Singaporeans do head out of the door during holidays. And ESPECIALLY when LTA do charge motorists exhorbitant ERP rates during weekends and holidays.

Here is where you have completely misinterpreted my post. With reference to the example of 107M I am merely drawing the operating module of the route.

(Trust me, if they didnt have the M varient to begin with you can dream on with having catchment for this svc. Be grateful theres even 10 pax, it could have been 0 down at Shenton Way)

See, drawing your attention to the hotcake svc 518, and at times 502 and 506, we see the urgent need for more express svc to and from more areas. The problem with the current bus network at town is there is an avalanche of choices for people staying NEAR the city (eg. Holland, Mountbatten) and practically NONE for the suburban areas. To give choices to those staying further away, do you think the way is to make it stop at every road along its way to like say, woodlands or something? Clearly absurd.

Because it is EXTREMELY unfair for residents staying far away to have its buses pass by every street, every alley before it drags its way to its destinstion. Is the strategy for catchment REALLY to stop at any place possible along the way eg. Bedok, Geylang, Simei before heading to Changi? Sure you gain pax along the way, while LOSING pax from the start of the svc. Essentially nothing changes. But now you see some ppl having lots of svcs, other with very few.

And this is where express buses step in.

The train network isnt helping much either, made worse with the new train lines. I mean, 14 bloody stops from Chinatown to Tampines?! Thats almost an entire Kwun Tong Line alr! Along the way, catering ppl from MacPherson, Bedok etc.

Forcing people into a corner, is what the current transport network is doing. How to expect people to give up cars this way?

TLDR, Singapore needs more direct bus connections. At least during weekends and holidays. Weekdays off peak I agree not necessary.

P.s. 107M is not even an express svc. Why on earth are you using it as an example? It loops here and there, stopping at tons of traffic lights and stops along its way. You call that express?! 25 minutes yes lah, probably late night when every bc is rushing home, like any other svc. Also, have you heard of something called "reverse commute"? Clearly you havent; it refers to the act of travelling in reverse to the general commuting pattern, eg. CBD to residential during AM peak. PP to Suntec in the evening at any day IS reverse commuting, ofc you only see <10 pax! (few ppl would even go out into the city at so late in the evening lol, most do so in the afternoon), I do suggest you observe Boon Keng Stn towards Hougang at the same time period though.

P.s. continuing to the 107M issue, there is, in every human being, something called " intelligence". I kindly recommend you use it the next time you post.

but it good business for PTE bus operators, people can take express service going to cbd in the weekend for clubbing or shopping. and MRT and cars problem will reduce. operators can use smaller bus for some service or even not operating some of them if no profit. u will never know the demand if never try out.

the private op to cbp will face issue. time rigid. now peop enjoy flexi time with sv 47 and 118. no need run for exact time bus every morn and eve. this also reduce car use. peop who drop kid to school, take care of older at home cannot always make bus time. now got more flexibility.

same case serv 4 in flora area. first pte op bus full, increase freq also. now peop pref serv 4.

if the demands are there, those PTE operators already jumped in and operate these express services during weekend....but then there is none right now...

further, your earlier post say that these service can run at 15 mins interval and no operation on sun/holidays...but now u r asking for full day operation during weekend?

u can see clearly the demand of those cityshoppers service in the past during weekend... pathetic...

23 December 2015 – A new service – Service 382G/W – will be implemented on Sunday, 3 January 2016. The service serves as a new direct link between Punggol and Sumang Walk via Punggol Field, Sumang Link, Sentul Crescent and Punggol Place. It will also enhance connectivity to Punggol MRT/ bus interchange, and key amenities such as Punggol SAFRA.

Service 382G, which loops at Sumang Walk via Punggol Field, will start its journey from Punggol Temporary Bus Interchange and ply Punggol Field, Sumang Walk, Sumang Link, Sentul Crescent, Punggol Place and back to Punggol Temporary Bus Interchange.

Service 382W, which loops at Sumang Walk via Sentul Crescent, will start its journey from Punggol Temporary Bus Interchange and ply in the opposite direction via Punggol Place, Sentul Crescent, Sumang Link, Sumang Walk, Punggol Field and back to Punggol Temporary Bus Interchange.

It will operate from 5.35am to 12.35am daily.

I was looking at all the SWTs and I realised the objective of supplementary services ('M' variants) under BSEP may be to replace some SWTs.

143M is a replacement for 143A, 63M is a replacement for the old peak-hour 63M, 139M is a replacement for 139A, 123M is a replacement for the old peak-hour 123M, 17A is a replacement for the old peak-hour 17A, 859A/B are replacements for the old midnight 859A, 53M is a replacement for 53A/B, 43M is a replacement and extension of 43A (from Buangkok Green to Serangoon)...

And up to date, LTA has not introduced any 'M' variant that is not based on an original SWT.

Therefore, I think LTA was experimenting with converting these short-distance SWTs to full-day services and see the outcome. However, as we see far less 'M' variants this year than in 2014, I suspect that LTA has seen this experiment as rather unsuccessful and may not be proceeding with introduction of such supplementary services.

Just my 2 cents worth...

Let's analyze M variants that have been introduced:

43M - This was required, but not from Punggol to NEX rather from Buangkok MRT to NEX (loop). The buses go empty between Buangkok and Punggol and obviously so as there is MRT to connect + parent service 43.

63M - makes absolute sense. The question is the number of buses added is too many. Can cut 1-2 buses. The better fix would have been 63 getting DDs but because of Rumm Tunggi, it cannot, so 63M was necessary

53M - this could have been averted by just extending 113 but I think LTA does not want to add any resources to 113 given its poor loading. It does make sense IMO. Though 45A should go. Is it still operational?

123M - this is necessary as well for Bukit Purmei residents, though 1 bus can be cut.

139M - I also support introduction of this M variant and it is doing well

143M - This is the M variant which was just NOT needed. Waste of resources.

859 A/B - This is absolutely needed due to lack of feeder service.

So out of the 7 M variants introduced, 5 are quite good. 1 route should have been shorter and 1 was not required.

36M, 100M, 106M, 158M - all others strictly not required on full day basis.

Note some like 189A, 183B are required only during peak hours to cater to industrial crowds.

LTA refused to extend 113 to Serangoon as it wants to maintain the connection to Hougang Street 11, even though it is just 900metres away from Serangoon Station.

They said there are still quite a number of people that takes 113 from inside Street 11. Not all are willing to walk out to Upper Paya Lebar Road to take 80 to Kovan / Hougang. (80 and 113 uses almost the same time to reach Kovan station). 53 and 53M has successfully taken off the AM loading from 113 but the PM loading for 113 is still heavy.

53M has too many buses IMO. The runtime is very relaxed. Drivers that drive 113 are often deployed to drive 53M btw. The off peak freq for 53M can be as long as 26minutes
