This is just infection between the joints on your Jaws. You can just visit any GP, where the doctor will give you some antibotics and painkillers.

It will take 1-3 weeks to recover.

I don't think there is any side effects unless operation is required.

my jaw cracks too. a doctor says its a dental problem. but i went to a TCM, he said it was due to loose ligaments. accupuncture helped and chewing gum will also help to strengthen the ligaments.

I had these cracking sound for years .. in fact I just open my mouth and move the jaws and the cracking sound can be heard. I got it when I did boxing when I was in my teen.. I will avoid thing like chewing gums as it will definately " locked " my jaw. Try not to yawn too loud and keep my mouth open as small as possible. Already 30 over years but didn't see doctor.. just maintain a "low profile " for the mouth and I am ok ... just my experience ... maybe visiting a doctor could help but I doubt I will go now that I am old leow ...

my dentist told me it's due to a loose ligament. the ligament probably got loosen when you yawn or laugh or open your mouth too wide. yup, it's not a big problem according to my dentist. quite a lot of people have this problem so don't worry too much! =)

but don't keep straining the loose ligament deliberately or else it may be dislocated. lols.

i believe it's the Temporomandibular Joint Disorder...

one way to aid "recovery" is to leave your jaw neutral, position your tongue to rest on the upper row of teeth whereby it's like when you're saying the letter N, remember to not flex your jaw muscles, this aids the recovery of the joint itself.
