Actually, Changi Prison has a very big compound, and the
buildings are quite far apart. I know it because I was inside there
before (I went there for a field trip). There is space for the
prisoners to "go outdoors", get sun light, see far distances and
stuff.
Whereas for Loyang Depot, with the tall walls wrapped around it,
it is almost impossible to look outside and see far distances. The
most is just the sky above, that's all. There is a reason why most
office buildings have transparent windows. It is for the workers to
see far far and rest their eyes.
Loyang depot is probably the only bus depot in Singapore that is
almost completely wrapped with tall walls.
Furthermore, the interior colours are quite dark... dark colours
are good conductors of heat. The inside is probably quite
hot/stuffy.
There may be a need for many air-conditioning and fans. Because
of that, the electricity bill may be quite high.
Or, could it be that they want the bus depot to be hot
and stuffy, that's why they use dark colours for the interiors and
wrap a tall wall around the depot? Cuz my lecturer say
that diesel engines start up fast when the temperature is high. If
the temperature is low, the diesel engine will take a long time to
start.
Of course, the temperature cannot be too high, otherwise there
is the risk of engine over-heating and catching fire. Acually,
given that the average temperature in Singapore is around 25
degrees Celsius, is there really a need to make the depot hot and
stuffy?
In the western countries, there may be a need to do it, cuz the
temperature is low, and this makes it difficult for engines to
start-up. As a result, service delays and stuff due to engine not
starting up is quite common in the western countries. Hence, there
is a need to make the depot hot and stuffy to make it easier for
the engine to start-up.
However, in countries along the equator, the temperature is
high. It is better not to make the depot hot and stuffy, as doing
so would increase the risk of engines catching fire.
Not that I want to say bad things, but, good luck to the people
maintaining the buses at Loyang Depot. If there is a fire at Loyang
Depot, we probably know why.
From the looks of it, Go-Ahead is bringing in the western
practices to Singapore whole-scale. Clearly, some of the western
practices may not be suitable here. Nonetheless, isn't this what
the LTA wants? So, deal with it.
Well, this is just my two cents worth.
Almost all of Bus garage in UK is enclosed,So the people there
