I hate it when guys beat about the bush or give false hope. I feel very cheated in the end. Much better to tell it straight (but tactfully). I don't think you should reject outright to the stage that the both of you cannot be platonic friends.

She also has a pride, and you shouldn't reject her in the presence of anybody.
