Jealousy and covetousness are negative in the sense that there is unhappiness in them and often contempt and resentment in others for having what one wishes to possess. Furthermore, it also often includes wishing to exclude others from having it.

It makes people say and do nasty things to one another.

Indeed, you are very right about friends breaking up because of jealousy. It happens to me many times. I don't give a damn about it any more for in the past I have done all I could but continued to be victimised by them. Without them, I am now a much happier person. Hooray!
