why can't they juz be more considerate? not say cannot ride on PEDESTRIAN pavement la, but can dun so rude can anot? Mad and dashed down some more, nearby got primary school oso. no safety knowledge at all.

The situation in Singapore is like this:

Government don't know what to do with cyclists who ride on pavements.

Although the law bans cycling on the pavement, we all know that pushing cyclists to the road will result in more traffic accidents and slower traffic flow. Since the government's priority is keeping road traffic smooth, it will push for stronger enforcement against cycling on pavements.

Personally, I prefer to cycle on the road. Yes, I do encounter many inconsiderate drivers when I cycle and feel like getting into a fist fight with them sometime. I think the government should increase road tax to discourage driving and encourage greener mode of transport like cycling.

i once saw at night at a T-junction (junction of boundary road and Mei Hwan crescent)with traffic light, the light was green for cars to exit the side road.

At this point of time, quite a few cars had already started to exit from the side road.
Then there was this wonderful cyclist who was color-blind, blind or just plain mad who rode out from the main road, totally ignoring the she had no right of way and that she would probably cause an accident...
the cars coming out from the side road had to brake or swerve just to avoid the mad cyclist...

I was sort of hoping that the cyclist would get knocked down, since that seemed to be her wish... i also pity the poor drivers who might get into trouble just because of one mad cyclist...

I am a cyclist myself.

I am disappointed to see that some of you fail to see our point of view. Yes I agree that there are rude cyclists, yes I agree that some ride at full speed even when there are little kids running about, yes I agree that they scare pedestrians sometimes. They all deserve to be scolded. No doubt about it.

But what about genuine cyclists who are like me? I ALWAYS slow down to a snail's pace (little kids ard or not) and say "excuse me" to the person in front if they are walking in the same direction as me (since they can't see me come from behind). I don't have a bell because it irritates me! lol. To those who are coming in my direction, most of the times they DON'T give way to me. Although I am right in the view of their eyesight. They don't even make the little effort that is needed to step aside courteously. Worse still, some of them who have kids (not sure if you are like this too TS) don't even make the effort to restrain their kids. They still happily let their kids run about. I am forced to stop in this case, just for the safety of their kids, and let them pass.

Get my point? It seems sometimes that I care more for their kids safety then they themselves as parents! Thats such a pathetic behavior from the parent's side. Inevitably the kids pick up the same uncouth behavior. Sad

You can argue that we have to cycle on road. I would argue back and ask you to try cycling on the road just once and see it for yourself. I am an avid mountain biker with many years of experience. So I'm fine with cycling on road. But what about newbies? Imagine teenagers cycling on road. Taxi drivers are the worst of the lot (sorry if you are one). They almost seem to want to hit you down.

Seriously, the citizens of this country almost completely lack the ability to show courteousness. Sorry to those who are courteous.

Everyone is just trying to blame the other without even taking a moment to think about the other party's view.

Oh btw, I've resorted to cycling on the road to reach my destinations such as bukit timah mountain biking track and such. Better then having selfish and discourteous pedestrians spoil my day for me =)

Seriously, there are alot of inconsiderate cyclist but there are also those considerate ones and courteous ones.

Got once, this mum and son, i cycling uphill then see them i slowed down and say excuse me, i repeat 3 times.

The son heard and wanted to give way then the mum say nvm ignore him he dare run me over.

Wah knn, i freakin pissed la. U see this kind of ccb attitude.

And most of u say ban cyclist on the pathway, next time ur kids wanna cycle what u say sorry mummy already petitioned for the banning of cyclist, u go on the road let the taxi uncle bang u over ba, then mummy can complain to ban the taxi off the road oso.

this problem will actually be solved by making the whole of Singapore having pavements for cyclist. Wink . Yes, some people think they are big f-ucks thinking they occupy the whole walking pavement / Road (for cyclist). Especially those uncle carry big boxes. If a car speeds past, then gg.

I have no problems with cyclists on the pavement. I rather they ride on the pavement than on the road. We have an average of 250 motorcyclist killed on the road yearly. I don't want a figure for bicyclists as well. I hope the government would make pavement wider for both cyclists and pedestrians. Tampines Ave 2 has a section that caters to both cyclists and pedestrians.

But what piss me off is bicyclists riding across Pedestrian (zebra) crossing.
They appear out of nowhere, and zoom across the Pedestrian crossing forcing a motorist to e-brake. A pedestrian you can spot when they are near the crossing, and you can be alert. But a cyclist would be at a distance when you approach the crossing and when you are near they just cut across the your front, as if the zebra crossing is a magic crossing.
I have been contemplating complaining to the authorities about such riding across zebra crossings.

I am a cyclist but I think you are missing the point most are making..

no. 1 - it IS illegal for cyclists to cycle on the pavement regardless of how dangerous the road is. We are 'guests' on the pavement and should act accordingly.

no. 2 - most don't MIND cyclists who ARE courteous, patient and polite. There ARE cyclists who are extremely rude, and cycle dangerously. On the road, they endanger themselves. On the pavement, they endanger others.

no. 3 - It isn't about who is right. Pedestrian OR cyclists. (For that matter, cars want cyclists off the road too. We might as well fly) Both just want safe passage. It helps if more cyclists are polite. This way it will help the pedestrians to be considerate too.

And the problem is that, most cyclist dont have the courtesy or the knowledge to behave better. Cos there isnt any ongoing campaign to teach the right manners on cyclist and pedestrain.

In fact, if a cyclist wants to use a zebra crossing or the pedestrain light at any junction. Cyclists are actually required to get down from their bikes to push their bicycles across the zebra crossing & pedestrain light.

Same as using a overhead bridge.

Remember that case of a man, sending his child on his bicycle to work and bang straight into a barricade coming down those slopes for wheelers and becomes paralysed?

Sigh the problem with singapore is that I feel its NON cyclists thats designing all these safety fixtures and cyclling pathways.

The bridge was a VERY long bridge with SLOPES coming down. I think most normal people if they dont see anyone on the bridge, will continue to cycle across the bridge. That is human nature.

Using a chest high barrier is really a bit of an overkill.

Most barriers I see just blocks up to about the handlebar of the bike. it might THROW you over if u dont stop in time. You might incur serioous injury on the front of your head but usually that's not as dangerous as back of skull and spinal injury.

But to put that around the chest height means it will throw you backwards, and regardless of speed, it will mean a severe injury on the back of your head and spine. If it had been a child, it would have been head level, and perhaps would have been fatal.

The best part is, those people that authorised the building of those barricades are now trying to push the blame around to the innocent civil engineer that disapprove of that structure.

To no. 1: Yep I know that it is totally against law and you are actually liable to be punishable under law for cycling on the pavement. I agree that we are "guests" on pavement. But that clearly doesn't give the right to any of the pedestrians to treat the cyclists so badly as some do. Stop quoting laws. There is such thing as courteousness or mercy in this world.. Be friendly and you make both ur day and the cyclist's day as well.

To no. 2: Most don't mind? My dear friend, I can say I am almost 99% polite all the time. But I would say only 60% or 70% return the same politeness to me. Some even give that look of destest even though I am gentle and polite. And yes, there are definitely inconsiderate n extremely rude cyclists around. There are always bound to be bad eggs everywhere.

To no. 3: I'm in my uni library and I literally chuckled when I saw you say "We might as well fly". LOL!! Nice one.. I had even noticed that its not just about cycling. Even when I am walking on the pathway, you can always come across couples/pairs who walk shoulder to shoulder and don't budge even if they see you coming. Thats the height of rudeness I have encountered. They should be really ashamed of themselves.

Right. And now Singapore will be the first in the world with a Ride safe campaign! Laughing Make a joke of itself yet again. Only in Singapore will you find campaigns which try to teach courteousness to its citizens. How sad.

And yep, I agree with the getting down and pushing your bike at the traffic signals. Its more safe and at least you are following some part of the law. lol.
