Private 'A' Levels

liyan SG

Dunno if this is the correct place to post, if not, please advise where should i post this at. Wink

I have a diploma already but now I am considering to get a 'A' levels cert.

I wonder if I can take it as a private student? If yes, what are the criterias?

Also, what are the subjects that are compulsory, and what are the subjects that cannot be taken private?

Thanks all! Mr. Green

can i know your reason for taking private a?

liyan SG

sigh... long long story.

in short, i want to teach, but i already had a diploma that is not relevant to what i want to teach.

if i take diploma again, i have to pay full sch fees as an independant student.

the other way ard it would be to take private 'a's and then apply to nie to be a teacher.

thanks everyone. Mr. Green

*this msg is not meant to be a insult*

as a current jc student, i would advice u to NOT do private 'As', cause its not a very easy course to do(watever the subs)..and seriously most are stuggling even in mi jc,( not because they are dumb- u ned a certain standard to go jc Razz )

-private 'A' passing rate is extremely low...in s'pore...
-u probably spend time and money better somewhere else...
-aiyah! jst dun la! ok?

if you plan to take private a’s and are a girl( don’t have to do ns, no bloody wasting of 2 years and deferment issues) i’d suggest you contact the british council for info on centres offering the UK a levels, don’t go for the singapore one. certain international/private schools do offer this route with reasonable or good teachers.

sigh, *feels lost*

i dont really want to take 'a's, but i need to form a path to my destination. Twisted Evil

dont waste your time. if MOE doesnt want you, teach in a private school.no point going through all the hassle.

dats wad alot of ppl said to me oso. so far all proven wrong.

juz because passing rate is low doesn't mean he can't do it.

First of all what is your diploma

and second what subject do you want to teach?

liyan SG

i have a design dip. i want to teach art.

you may ask why i never take art dip in the first place.

when i was making the decision, my then art teacher told me i should take a dip in either design or art. in the name to broaden my perspective i choose design because i thought i would be doing art for the rest of my life.

case of blind leading blind.

i finish my design dip then realised i would not be allowed to take an art degree, because of 'not relevant'.

to teach art in moe i need to have art background, or 'a' levels with art as subject. that is why my initial question.

** and if anyone wants to know why i want to teach art only, it is a matter of interest. had been thinking abt it since 15, and a good 8 years had past and i still havent stepped towards it. big sigh.**

why dun u go to a private uni instead?

then from there, once u have a recognized degree, go into teaching?

the interviewers prefer a degree holder..

I strongly do not advise you to take A levels as a private candidate. First of all, you cannot take Art alone and be accepted into NIE as an Art teacher, you will have to at least find a couple of subjects to fulfill the minimum requirements of 2As 2 AOs. In additional, the course is relatively different from what you took in dipolma and extra effort will have to be put into first set yourselves to the A level course second to understand the requirements of the exams.

Alternatively, I will advise you to take up Art dipolma again and then go through the degree course. Since you already have the foundation I will not see why you cannot excel in the field.

Cheers

thanks for the vote of confidence. Mr. Green I am sure I will do well in an art dip and eventually as an art teacher, but taking another dip means i have to pay school fees which will come up to 50k for 3 yrs.

lots of money, yes, and not that i never consider it. it is just that if there is another path to my destination i should explore it also.

guess my best bet is still to save up for the school fees. i am 23, i give myself another 5 yrs to earn at least 2 yrs sch fees, borrow yr 3 from my parents, and work part time while schooling.

by 32 or 33 i can teach.

but that feels eons away. and the gap between me and my students to be will be very wide! Twisted Evil

You can take the A level route - it is good to try it out but look around the competition - might be a fruitless effort if there is no guarantee that you do better than others in 4 A level subjects to get into NIE.

Why not make use of your design diploma to enter into the art scene? You never know what you might enjoy out there until you try it. Maybe it might open up some other route that you might not be expecting. Art is art - it is within a person . Does not matter where you do it , how you do it , art is always there for you regardless of whether you teach art or create art . If you are good - you never know where opportunities might come by .

By the way with your talent- why not check out british council because I think they have some creative art scholarships to UK institutions . Might be another route to get around to teach art. Just a suggestion to build on what you already worked hard for. Don't disregard your diploma - make use of it, just like what I did. The moment you see the beyond - it opens alot of doors.

why don’t you go uni and take the course relavent to what you want to teach?

Isis SG

heh.. u still need to pass the interview... there is no 100% u will get into MOE.
However, for arts i do not know whether it is easy to get in.

hw much it cost to take A'level ?
A'level is not easy for those in schooling JC, how about private?
if u taking A'level, which stream are u going?
Art stream? criteria is 3 A'level and 2 Ao subject for private?????

In art stream, U will be studying history, geo, econ etc... and
college maths, general papers

Have u done these subjects in Poly? are u certain u can handle them as a private students.

But then there is another sayings: as long u have the will, u will have the way
Sometime, u can give it try if u are really sure that there is what u want.

liyan SG

honestly, i dowan to do 'a's if i dont have to, cos it was never my intention. but still, if i have to, i will still clench my teeth and finish it. (though it will definitely be really tedious).

i still love my design diploma, i have no wish to do interior design but i really appreciate my design education. it opened my eyes and opened my mind, but unfortunately it is not relevant to get myself into an art degree.

creative art scholarships to UK institutions : moe's minimum criteria is art dip from lasalle or nafa. i thought there might be a chance some art institution might take me with my design dip. but moe doesnt recognise. sheesh.

I hope someone can help point out some doors for me. I've been walking into many closed doors everywhere i turn. my forehead is all bruised. Mr. Green

liyan SG

i know there is no 100%, but i am as sincere and as passionate as anyone can get. if i cant get in the first time i would just have to apply the following year.

but i am quite confident that if i have the sufficient qualifications to be able to apply, i would be able to accepted. Mr. Green

i feel u shd go into the working world. teaching isn’t all that fun anyways.
