Are all of us growing apart?

Everyone has experienced, or will experience at one point or another the famous Generation Gap between you and your parents. You and your parents will dress differently, talk differently and behave differently.

But lately, I've been noticing growing gaps between people of our generation. Get on the MRT on any day and you'll notice this if you look around. There'll be youth in loose jeans and T-shirts (the casual look), guys in tight fit jeans and rocker style looks, girls wearing Jap fashions, guys in punk fashions, girls with Gothic black faces etc... Among friends, you have notice the fashionable chinese who listen to the latest Asian Pop and the conservative cheenas, you have the Mat rockers, and the tudung-wearing good girls, the punk indians and the quiet nice guys.

Now, for me it's becoming harder to relate and to communicate. It's like people of our generation are becoming so different, so split. What the hell is happening?

I too call it generation gap. But this can be just the pyshical or material things that you are seeing here. I have siblings who are much younger than I am and we are products of different generation, we dress differently and have different taste in music etc. But we are able to connect on a certain level. That to me is good enough. Friends have laughed at me for not being able to keep up with the latest pop music and all, but I don’t really bother as each has their own different preferences and like I said.. most importantly, there isn’t any communication breakdown, that’s more crucial.

Well the thing that is different in this generation to our parents is that, there are more subcultures(punk. goth, emo, etc.) in our generation. So it results in everyone dressing differently and have different attitudes and are we growing apart? Unfortunely I dun have a answer to that question. Anyway the subcultures situation in Singapore isn’t as diverse as in other countries, since most singaporean youngsters follow pop culture.

Strength in diversity.New genres of communication and music are popping up nowadays, cross-disciplinary works.

I believe we have to evolve a unique sense of individualism, before we come back together willingly to form a unified mega-culture.

It's the same with politics, confederations and regional alliances do not work unless states are allowed to express themselves through self-determination, and then onto a future stage of self-integration.

Fashion/sub-culture is just a smaller scale thing that's all. You've got to break it down to the smallest level and let it aggregate upwards again..

Just because people look alike doesn't mean they think alike Razz
It takes effort getting to know people regardless of how they look. Maybe you find people who are similar and thus familiar, easier to approach . But sometimes it's fun to get yourself out of the comfort zone and try to understand & learn about a different culture... who knows you might like what you discover.

Problem starts when Christians cannot even walk into a Hindu temple and Muslims cannot even force themselves to walk into a Buddhist temple. I sometimes conclude that such people have tofu brains.
