vietnam was kinda good. mopeds..bikes for a change!
My thoughts on the Vietnam special:
Top Gear normally set out to prove something, to express their
views, or to conquer some challenges. They travelled to the north
pole to prove a car could do it, they crossed Botswana in cars to
prove you dont need a 4WD, They went to America to expose their
culture and show that it’s not the car, it’s the relationship you
build with it that matters.
This time though, they just kind of … were there. The bikes
weren’t tested at all, the only challenge was to drive across the
country and, excuse the modern cliche, how hard can that be?
As such, I found the guys trying too hard to make something of
the journey, to give it some raison d’etre. I get it that Vietnam
is beautiful and has a very powerful history, but why did they go
there? I still don’t know what the point of the special was aside
from … having a special? The cinemetography was there, the epic
music was there, but I felt like there was no clear purpose driving
it all.
