DRX, presents are Not a necessity in a relationship, that, I
agree with you. But there's No harm in wanting to surprise a loved
one with a present from time to time 
The
unhealthy part is when a partner EXPECTS the gifts, rather than
treating them as a token of love from their partner...
Love, fidelity, trust, protection & utmost care are the basics
of a relationship. Everything else, is a bonus : )
