sherlockian21 SG hey guys i'm planning to take 3 A Levels as a private candidates. They are economics, english and math c. during my self-study, i'm planning to take a diploma course in a private institution since i need it for my student's pass (i'm a foreigner). now, i'd like to ask u guys out there for some opinions, comments and views on this. is it difficult to self study? i mean math and english can be studied 'quite' easily. but econs may be tougher. please help. your views will be much appreciated
Parka SG Everything is possible. You only lose the advantage because students in school are constantly being exam-trained.
FireIce SG u need alotta self-discipline and determination........ u might lose out a little bcos teachers in sch are experienced and they can prepare the students for the A level papers based on past years' trend...... oso, a classroom environment, interaction with other students will help to broaden ur views (especially for GP and Econs) and branch out your thoughts better..... as for Econs, there are plenty of reference books in libraries and bookstores......if possible, ask around the JCs which are the texts the teacher recommend for reading.....
Parka SG those economic discussions are also exam-oriented. There are more than meets the eye in Economics.
sgboy2004 SG wah...bcos of the teacher...steady lah... _______________________ sgboy2004, the Good Boi Croco Corner
sgboy2004 SG why not look for a private centre to enrol in? _______________________ sgboy2004, the Good Boi Croco Corner
sherlockian21 SG well, basically private centres will require me to be older than normal takers. so i dun want to waste my time. i'm not taking GP. so econs is my latest worry. but as far as i am concerned now, after studying few chaps, i find it very interesting. though, i dunno whether there are secret formulae that the sch might give in order to ace the exam.
MooKu SG Read widely. Recommended readings can be taken from books by Roger Arnold, John Sloman, Peter Maunder etc. The three I mentioned are just the more common ones around, but different authors have their different good points in different topics, so read widely. Also, don't forget to read up on current affairs regarding the economy of course... Read "The Economist". Errr, just keep practising your MCQ. The questions kinda repeat every year, though not ALL of them. MCQ should be quite easy to score. And then practise and practise essays. If possible, you can try getting essay outlines from the colleges. Some have compiled essay outlines for study.
frank_person SG Economics is all about getting the right points for the topic/essay question required. In general, the more you read from those reference points, the more points u can draw out from other people's works. The plus point to help u excel in Econs, is to develop your own points. That means, given a certain question, can u relate it to the current economy today? or how can the current affairs today affect the various industries today? wat is the impact? etc etc.... Econs is actually easy and interesting if u can see how all the points in the notes or textbook links to today's world as well as major economic events in history...... of coz be as "kiasu" as singaporeans and u must include ALL points that other ppl use in their essay (plus ur own points).. hee hee.... Oh!! and for A levels, MCQ, practise ALL MCQ questions, best is practise even up to 20 yrs ago's questions. haha.. many questions are repeats and come up every other year again and again... The key to MCQ is ----> PRACTICE. Is there still a section call data response or something lydat for A levels? That one... God bless u!!.... haha.... that one juz answer the questions directly and throw in watever points is useful from the paragraphs of data.. haha good luck! I kinda miss economics during my jc days..... a pity i did not take that in university....
barkhide SG Not taking GP? How come? I seriously encourage you to enroll in a private school because for Maths C and econs there are some chapters which might be hard to comprehend if you do it on your own...also...by studying at a pte institute you will get to know more about the exam formats and what are the good methods of presenting your answers...
