Liverpool boss Benitez: We have it on Chelsea
tribalfooball.com - April 24, 2007

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has warned Jose Mourinho that their recent success over his Chelsea side has left confidence sky high ahead of their Champions League meeting.
The Reds travel to Stamford Bridge for Wednesday's semi-final first leg showdown buoyed by a 2-0 success over the Blues in their last Premiership meeting back in January.

But the Spanish tactician also masterminded a semi-final victory over Mourinho two seasons ago when Liverpool went on to win the Champions League.

"We are boosted by the fact that we beat them in our last meeting at Anfield, and we know that the atmosphere and support we can generate there is very important for us," said Benitez.

"I suppose I would like to be in Chelsea's position only because it means trophies would have been won.

"But if you ask me whether I would want to swap this city, my team, my club, our stadium and supporters then the answer is no."

The former Valencia coach insists his side won't under-estimate Chelsea despite their recent success over the London club.

"Our aim is to approach this game in the same way that we did against Barcelona, we want to win and we want to score," he continued.

"It may be more difficult because Chelsea do not concede many goals.

"We go to Stamford Bridge intent on winning. We have done that both against Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven in the previous knockout rounds.

"But we do not under-estimate Chelsea. They are a very, very good side and have proved that by winning the title in the last two seasons.

"We are a better team than two years ago, maybe they are too, but for us we have more experience and we think we can do it again."

JOSE MOURINHO last night taunted Rafa Benitez by claiming Chelsea would have sacked him if he had won as few trophies as the Kop boss.

The Blues chiefs attack upped the ante for tonights Champions League crunch with Liverpool.

He said: Three years without a Premiership title? I dont think I would still be in a job.

But Benitez, who led Liverpool to Euro glory in 2005 and the FA Cup 12 months ago, pointed to the cash Roman Abramovich splashed to help Chelsea win back- to-back Premierships and two Carling Cups.

The Anfield boss said: It depends on the money you spend and so you can decide the value of each point Chelsea have more than Liverpool.

Chelsea have good players but if you spend big money you get a good team which should always be competing to be in the finals.

Mourinho also claimed Liverpool have had an easy ride to tonights semi-final while his side is still fighting for four trophies.

But Benitez insisted: I dont like to the play the game that Mourinho does.

He says we have more fresh legs but we want to be in the final the same as Chelsea.

Mourinho is a great coach. But the key to this tie is not him or me.

Its about Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard so I will not play these games.

Mourinho will be without injured Michael Ballack but Joe Cole is set to replace the German in midfield.

Liverpool dumped Chelsea in the semis before their final victory over AC Milan two years ago.

Blues have been desperate for revenge ever since but Benitez insists he can sense the same feeling in his squad as he did before that 2005 triumph.

The Spaniard warned: We are better than two years ago.

Maybe they are as well but we have more experience now and I think we can do it.

Two years ago I could sense the players were ready to win it, even though people didnt believe it was possible. And I have the same feeling again.

Liverpool, who also knocked out Chelsea in the FA Cup semis last season, have not scored in five games at Stamford Bridge with Benitez in charge.

But Benitez insisted: We lost 1-0 there in September but, yes, it was still a good game for us.

These two guys seriously don't like each other, man..

Kaka says Milan are on course for Athens

ROME, April 25 (Reuters) - Playmaker Kaka believes AC Milan are on course to reach the Champions League final despite losing 3-2 to Manchester United in the first leg of their semi-final.

The Brazilian international scored twice at Old Trafford to give Milan a 2-1 interval lead but the Premier League leaders fought back with two second-half goals by Wayne Rooney, the second in stoppage time.

'It's a very bitter result that gives us little margin for error but I'm convinced Milan can go through,' Kaka told Wednesday's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

'After the 2-2 draw (in the quarter-final first leg) with Bayern Munich we had to get a great result away from home. Now we have to win but we've got the advantage of playing at home.

'We will have to play like United did against us. We will have to show we've got great personality and enormous energy because we face a real battle.'

Milan defender Massimo Oddo rued his side's failure to convert a couple of chances early in the second half.

'We were stupid. We played a great first half and their second goal was fine but then we missed several opportunities to make it 3-1,' he said.

Milan may be without two important players in the return leg.

A recurrence of an old knee injury forced captain Paolo Maldini to sit out the second half at United while midfielder Gennaro Gattuso limped off in the 53rd minute with a sore foot.

'The knee swelled up and the pain became unbearable. It will be difficult to recover for the return leg,' said Maldini.

'It will be a difficult match for Milan. We didn't deserve to lose at Old Trafford but the English side put in a fantastic performance. They fought right to the limit and showed great self-belief. We will have to follow their example.'

We’re 180 minutes away from a much-anticipated Man Utd-Chelsea final now, it seems. It’d certainly make for an enthralling spectacle to see who emerges victorious in each of the three cup-finals(the league clash is as much as cup final given that game would effectively determine the destination of the title) between the sides in May…

don't rule out milan yet

iceFatboy SG

woke up and saw the last 20mins of the game between chelsea vs liverpool.

and I was rubbing my eyes cause it was like porto..

everyone in blue going to the ground, it was like Cole, then drogba, then SWP.
what's up with that?

and everytime there is a foul, either John or Makele will try to throw the ball into deep space.

or maybe, I was watching the wrong channel again.. Wink

Man Utd boss Ferguson upbeat on Rio
tribalfooball.com - April 25, 2007

Sir Alex Ferguson hopes a week will be long enough for Rio Ferdinand to recover from his groin injury and face Milan.

The Manchester United defender aggravated the injury during last weekend's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough in the Premiership.

He missed the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night and was expected to sit out the return in San Siro.

But Ferguson is now cautiously optimistic that the centre-half will be available to help United's bid to protect their 3-2 advantage.

"We have seven days to get Rio fit and that will be crucial," said Ferguson.

"I do have options because I could play John O'Shea in central defence and Gabriel Heinze at left-back.

"But that would mean using Darren Fletcher at right-back and, given his performance, I would prefer not to do that."

DUnno. saw replay of ManU match only.

Reds were diving like mad. cheat here & there to get their 1 goal.

Later after the "kaka show", Fergie was seen talking to Ref B4 start of 2nd half. ManU seem to dive & cheat more in the match!

Ref gave a few free kicks near the goal post for nothing & ManU scored 2 goals fr the melee.

I wonder what else did i miss since i did not see full match? Shocked

SumOne SG

Gee.... you really don't know soccer do you? Laughing Rolling Eyes

gangsterkillar SG

I think it's you MU fans who dun know your soccer, judging from what i see from your ridiculous comments like the one above! Rolling Eyes

Trump_Card SG

Forza milan!! I predict a milan vs chelsea final and a triumphant chelsea...I hate chelsea btw Mad

SumOne SG

??? You confused is it? The post is by iceFatboy, not me. We're not clones unlike some others. Also, I'm not a Man U fan. But guess I did miss that comment above.

If anything, it makes the two of you similar. Since you two say similar things and post in the same manner (just borrowing your logic), it implies something?

Like I've said before, certain things I say are directed to the clonemaster, even though I may not be a Man U fan.

Anyway, you two have fun with each other.

walesa SG

I'm not ruling anything out. Needless to say, however, the advantage now lie with Man Utd and Chelsea...
