Rectifier for NC35 RVF

hi everyone, sorry for the recent RVF barrage. i've consulted my RVF friend, btw he's some guy who wrenches his own bike for track use. the words with ">" is what i said to him, and the rest are replies... as far as technical knowledge goes, i really trust this guy, and he's using this mod on his own bike. no problems....

Mild defect - weak voltage reading across battery terminals, via multimeter. We need to rev the machine. Get it changed fast.

Serious Defect - Main fuse blows, bye bye Mr Rect. Until a new one is put on, machine gets stuck where Rect gets roosted. If your far away fm Sg, goodluck!

Corroded, oxidised connections btw rect and connector = resistance. Wires start melting.

A damaged rect basically kills the only way how excess voltages are dump, putting the stator/coil at risk.

Pentium P3 heatsink, thermal compound btw mating surfaces of heatsink and rect, plus cooling fan. relocation of rect fm "HOT" spots to somewhere cooler, if the stock wiring harness allows.

Tell your mates :
NOT to cut the wires leading to the socket of the rect, rather clean the contact points periodically.

Keep a spare rect if riding overseas.

Relocate the rect to the rear, LHS, under the pillion seat.

Put on a HUGE heatsink, and a fan(connected via rear tailights 12v source).

That it doesn't matter putting on a SRAD rect.

That if the rect is well and good now, it doesn't mean it remains the same way tomorrow in stock trim. It WON'T. (check nc30 forum for references. Everyone gets it! Honda is a cash cow I tell ya!)

That having one headlight off, they make the rect work harder since there is more excess volatges to dump now.

The stator/coil is part of the alternator that stays. The other integral part of an alternator is the rotor, which spins since it's connected to one end of the crankshaft. Stator/Coil + Magneto/Rotor = Alternator.
Part of the alternator, yes. Alternator, No.

allo sarah.. sometimes i also scared to ask advice from this guy, cos he's damn pro... like his modding methods very complicated right? i think must have very good knowledge of circuits then can do, if not join the wires wrongly and short out some expensive parts then cham liao...

but i think it'll work lar.. how about get your hubby to pass this tip around the other RVF riders, and see what their comments are? Smile

i just saw my friend's setup with my own eyes yesterday... his rectifier is in the tailboard, on the left side, complete with the pentium heatsink.. wah.. pro sia....

i think it's a very good idea, but can be hard to setup. have a feeling the rectifier gets rid of excess voltages from the alternator (when riding at high revs for long periods), by dissipating it as heat.. can anyone verify that?

hi hi,,,,,two weeks ago i just burn up my rectifier and my main cdi,,,,,,,really damm suay,,,,,was going at 130km/p then suddenly all things black out and the bike was dead suddenly and i had to go to the road shouler and park,call a tow truck,,,i can tell u such things are unpredictable,,,the rectifier price is still ok,,,but for the main cdi,,,$300plus plus,,,,KNN>>...wallet kanna burnt also,,,,,i also cover my rvf one eye…got switch to open and close headlights,,,,,save electricity,,,,but still this whole thing can burnt up,,,KNN,,,,really bo bian at sometimes when this kind of things happen,,,,,just a friendly reminder,,,,,going oversea then must bring these two things and plus a spare battery,,,,,anything can happen

hi castrol, sorry to hear about your incident.. but $300+ for a CDI is cheap, innit?

i know there're some RVF riders who do a mod for one headlight to be off.. to help the rectifier, at the advice of the motorshops. i've this friend who told me the opposite.. current from the rectifier gets routed to the battery and other electrical components (but i'm not sure how because i haven't seen the schematics.. doubt i'd understand them anyway.. Very Happy ). any excess not taken up will be dissipated as heat if i'm not wrong. a working rectifier will not overcharge the battery, so i guess it means for extended periods of high rev riding (a lot of electricity generated), the rectifier works by dissipating this energy as heat. main problem according to my friend is that the rectifier isn't well made and is not tolerant to excess heat.. so the rectifier screws up, esp the connections.

so i really wouldn't advise you to continue to use the headlight mod. i know perhaps it sounds weird that a stupid newbie 2B rider is advising a lao jiao 2A rider what to do.. keke.. Very Happy but i didn't think of this myself. a friend who has serviced more than 8 different models of bikes 2A, 2B you name it, told me about this. read my first post... besides, he's been using this modification for sometime, showed it to me on his bike yesterday.

the rectifier has been relocated to the left side of his tailboard, and there was a computer type of heatsink attached to it. the heatsink was powered using the power source to the taillight. it's been working very well so far...
