Barca to unveil details of UNICEF
accord in New York
MADRID, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Spanish and European champions Barcelona
will disclose the details of their collaborative agreement with the
UNICEF at a ceremony at the United Nations headquarters in New York
on Thursday.
Barca said on Wednesday that club president Joan Laporta would
attend the event where he would give details of the ground-breaking
initiative.
The club announced last May that they had agreed to donate 0.7
percent of annual income starting from the 2006/07 season to the
United Nations as a contribution to the organisation's Millennium
Development Goals campaign.
Barca, whose motto in Catalan is 'mes que un club' (more than just
a club) predict that this season's income will be in the region of
240 million euros ($307.7 million).
The UN's Millennium campaign aims to reduce extreme poverty, hunger
and infant mortality, achieving universal primary education and
promoting sexual equality.
The agreement will also mean the team's famous scarlet and blue
shirts carry the UNICEF emblem.
Barca are one of the few leading European football teams not to
carry commercial sponsorship on their shirts.
They didn't pay any money to have the UNICEF logo on their shirts.
They actually pledge to donate 0.7 percent of their 2006/07 season
income estimated around 1.7 million euros.
But they get to sell their new jerseys with the UNICEF logo what,
enough to make back everything plus got profits somemore cos these
will be limited editions, only available for sale this year. So you
think all their fans a round the world won't rush to buy the new
limited edition jerseys?
