In all fairness, Beckham plays his heart out for England (who
remembers the final qualifying match against Greece at Old Trafford
in 2002?) as well. In terms of technical abilities, both Gerrard
and Beckham are very good and both players complement each other in
their strengths and weaknesses. Besides free-kicks, it is
well-known that Beckham has excellent crossing and passing ranges.
In fact, the stats of this season La Liga reveal Beckham has the
highest number of assists for shots on target. That is a compliment
on his contribution to a team.
Beckham however does not have the natural aura of a leader on the
pitch. He is no Bryan Robson, Roy Keane or Tony Adams for that
matter. But like these three players, he plays with his heart on
his sleeve.
