Poly student with sub-paper diploma wishes to sign on SAF. Wise idea? Can study part-time also right? Possible? Is it easy to get promoted?

The first thing you should ask yourself is whether you are interested in army life. You must not regret once you have sign it or else it is going to cost you a bomb to break the contract.

I don't really know because I haven't been to NS yet. But from the look of other POSTS from other FORUMS, I think I still can take Army lah.

Anyone, any Officers or sign-ons out there willing to help me?

1. Can choose to study after signing on? (Part-Time or Full-Time)
2. How to earn money in SAF? What rank and qualifications?
3. Is Pilot the best choice?
4. They say Pilot needs a "Pilot face" to be one. Is it true?

If you have yet to go to NS, and you don't mind the army way of life, and very content with an iron rice bowl, go ahead, especially with the Saver's Scheme now, whereby if I'm not wrong u need a year's advance notice to quit. Why would you want to sign on anyway??? I'm not saying signing on is no good, but there must be a rationale.

Are you interested in the job of a pilot? The occupation is glamarous, but it is not easy. It is a stress-filled job whereby your life is put at stake everytime u depart from the runway.

Lots of people study part-time during NS, but I don't think your CO will be very approving of that...... will ruin your chances of promotion.

Anyway, you are going to NS right now. With your qualifications, I would say go for OCS. It is higher pay, and if you do decide that you enjoy life and wanna sign on, you will get backpaid, so no need to hurry.

Most of the SAF people I know who signed up normally regrets in doing so.

Only good chance in SAF is you get a scholarship and maybe only then can you consider signing up. Else, don't even think about it.

My 2 cents worth :

Go into NS first. During BMT, see how screwed up the SAF is. Despite all the grand talk about ideals, pride and all, the people running the show are more concerned for their personal gain and promotion.

Though its an iron rice bowl, not everybody can take the life. Think first, then think again... then tear the contract into 2 pieces.

My advice is to go through NS first. Experience army life. And if you like it, sign on! And if you don't, it's not to late.

this depends on yourself, whether are u in any financial needs or can you endure of spending your twenties in the SAF.The contract now is ten years. As a regular you will have your financial independant with a monthly income.I am a regular in air force. We have a irregular working time.(this will depends on the flying schedule for the day)Sometimes we need to work longer.Sometimes very very early in the morning. But u can still squeeze in time for your part-time studies. But if they required your service,work comes first. The second line job(aircraft servicing)is more regular at least u know the working time(either 8 to 5 or 4 to .....)depending on the number of unserviciable aircraft for the day.

I heard from my friend that a friend of his was given a chance to study after 3 years of service as an officer. He had already sign-on with SAF. And his Poly results are so so.

So I am wondering whether I could sign-on as an Officer straight away.
Is it true that there would definitely be chance for me to go oversea to study?

I think you should join Commandos - Elite of the Singapore Armed Forces.
Best man! High pay and the trainings are fun.
As for the studying part, I am not so sure.

My interest is money and I think so is everyone.

You should look at what you have right now.
Hey, I mean what can a Poly grad do right now!?! Right? Some University students are not even being employed! Sign-on first then get money. At least, you won't waste your 2 and a half years doing nothing. When you sign-on liao you have money, with that you are better than all those that didn't sign-on when you ORD. RICHER! CORRECT?!
