16-year old youth jailed for raping elder
sister
A 16-year-old youth has been sentenced
to six years' jail for raping his biological elder
sister.
The public Prosecutor Lee Cheow Han said this
"repulsive act is certainly against public morality".
But in his mitigation, the defence lawyer Subhas Anandan said the
teenager himself was sexually abused by his own elder brother when
he was ten years old.
He was also physically abused by him.
Mr Subhas said the teenager developed behavioural problems after
this incident.
In 2004, he was sentenced to one month's detention in the Singapore
Boy's Home for offences such as theft and inhalant abuse.
He was then 13 years old.
After his release, one year later, he was hauled back to court for
a more serious offence, robbery.
For this, he was sentenced to 24 months in the home.
The teenager was on home leave from his detention when he raped his
sister in their flat in 2006.
He did it while his mother was sleeping in the bedroom and his
mentally challenged younger brother was playing in the living
room.
Justice Choo Han Teck said in view of the teenager's age he is
giving him a short sentence.
But should he commit any further offences, he will receive a longer
jail term.
"You will come out an old man," said Justice Choo.
He also said that while behind bars the teenager should attend
offence specific rehabilitative programmes, "not only for his own
sake but for the sake of others."
