I wonder which sounds worse and more offensive to the ear.

Singapore English or Singapore Chinese.

Singapore English with its jarring Idiosyncracies and Chinese, Malay words thrown in.

Singapore Chinese - Chinese words generously peppered generously with English verbs and nouns.

One of the "problems" living in a multi-racial country.

Most Singaporeans can speak either language fluently but due to the meaning of words being more appropriate in the other language, they substitute it in when speaking either english or mandarin.

I don't see it as a problem per se because language is nothing but a form of communication and as long as you are understood, it serves its purpose.

Granted that there are many words and expressions available in Chinese that the English language does not have any adequate equivalent, but there are those who speak Chinese and mangle in a whole slew of English words which there are Chinese words for.

Reminds me of the Peugeot ad where this Indian bashes his Hindustan Ambassador and makes it look like a Peugeot 206 and he drives around in a mangled car thinking that he's da bomb.

haha, i like hokkien, can sen hokkien sms if u know how...for example, to send 'si beh song' , u use chinese, type 'xi bei song'

xi = happiness
bei = blanket
song = give as a present

there ! u got hokkien in sms dat is more unique. Smile

for du lan, u just use chinese du (alone) lan (lazy)...there...u got another one...

An example given to me was when a Brit guy was in Aus. After a few drinks, the hot aussie babe who were drinking with him stood up and said 'I'm going back to my room, catch ya later' and left.

Now, here is the problem: "Catch ya later" means to see you later literally to the brit, but to the Aussies it means the same as goodbye.

My brit friend had the impression that he was being invited to her room.

as we can see from the various examples, it is clear that communication does not require the use of hard to understand and rarely used english terms, what is needed rather, is to use terms and words the other party can easily understand.

the examples kindly provided like the beer and the room, clearly shows that. the rule of communication is broken if 1 insists on using terms and words few know, or the other party does not know. when that happens, thank you for your time.

Wahaha oh this reminds me on what happened to my cousin maybe years ago when she went to US to study.

She was at the chemist and they sell stationary there as well and she asked, " Where do you keep the rubbers" (She meant erasers) and the chemist directed her to the condoms shelf
