iori8888 SG Yo people... I would like to know more about wine... Could you please help me out with this? Wine tasting... how to appreciate each sip? (I heard that must skip the center part of the tongue...) The first glass tastes very different from the last glass? Red wine read meat... white wine white meat? The vintage of wine... what about it? How to know which year it is by tasting? Longer it's kept... better it is? Can't be kept after opening? The skin of the grapes affect the quality of wine? Different wine uses different glass? What kind of glass? Wine glasses have to be washed with non-fragrance detergents and hot water? Wine presented in a restaurant usually poured to you for a sip... while others only allow a sniff of the aroma... what is the purpose of that? To approve if the wine is good? How can I know from just a sniff? (I heard that you are suppose to open your mouth a little... and when you breath it in... you will be able to taste it in your throat...) Breathing from both your mouth and nose?
Qitai SG Only know some answers. I may not be totally correct. Red wine read meat... white wine white meat? True, but I don't care. How to know which year it is by tasting? No such thing lah!! Only possible if you are familiar with the produce from all region every year. Which means you have keep track of the wine industry and tasted all the produce each year. Not sure even if the pro is doing that. Longer it's kept... better it is? Not true. Only that in some years where the harvest is very good quality, people keep it until there is a good event to want to drink it. So, the wines from the good years are consider as vintage wine and are collectibles. Can't be kept after opening? Yeap, unless you want it to turn into vinegar. When expose to air, wine turns into vinegar slowly. Generally, it is advised to drink it within 24/48hrs of opening. The skin of the grapes affect the quality of wine? Not sure. But red wine is with skin and white wine is without skin. Same grape.

(I heard that must skip the center part of the tongue...) Wine expert can read down the grapes used in the wine just by one sniff. As far as i understand. There are many ways of tasting wine. Sip and spit. Sip and swirl. Sip and suck and more. The first glass tastes very different from the last glass? If you're considering starting Red wine tasting as a interest, yeah. If not. Don't have to bother. Red wine read meat... white wine white meat? The vintage of wine... what about it? Whatever that is sold in restuarants are specially selected young bottled wine. Vintage wines will be kept in Cellar and only for guest who wishes to view vintage wine list. Otherwise, it not be pushed for sale. Duration is not the importance for young bottles, but brand and estate is. How to know which year it is by tasting? By experience and guidance. Longer it's kept... better it is? Only vintage wine can be kept. Young bottled wines like Penfolds Shiraz Carbanet 2003 should be consumed within period of 2 yrs Can't be kept after opening? It'll become vinegar after a day in room temp. Quality will deteriorate in two days less if kept in fridge The skin of the grapes affect the quality of wine? The more vintage red is, the paler. For white is darker. Skin of grapes...when you drink wine. You can't see the skin... Different wine uses different glass? What kind of glass? Crystal wine glass. Untinted and clear. Wine glasses have to be washed with non-fragrance detergents and hot water? Yes, very important. A tint of unthroughly washed glassware will affect wine quality greatly. Wine presented in a restaurant usually poured to you for a sip... while others only allow a sniff of the aroma... what is the purpose of that? Wine test. Basically, if don't know how to taste...better not do the test. Cos it's kinda embarrassing to reveal a amatuer. Servers will see thru it. Just ask him/her to guide you thru, they'll be more then glad to help. To approve if the wine is good? If you and find it tasting ok. How can I know from just a sniff? (I heard that you are suppose to open your mouth a little... and when you breath it in... you will be able to taste it in your throat...) Breathing from both your mouth and nose?Experience, what you heard is one way of testing. Professionals.
M©+square SG For the question about the longer vintage wine was kept the better it is. Yes. But it'll be waste of money for amatuers. Because vintage will be too complex for beginners to drink. The taste might turn you off the first time. Important note!!!!! Never bring the wine cork up to your nose and sniff. It's really embarrassing. Only wine expert sniff by cork and will know the qualities of the wine. At times they need not sip and test the wine. Showing you the cork only shows you how was the wine stored. Horizontally of vertically. Thats all.
