Iraq reward offer for UK soldier
Iraqis have been offered £100 for capturing a British female
soldier.
The offer was made by cleric Abdul-Satar al-Bahadli as he waved an
assault rifle during his Friday sermon to hundreds of worshippers
in Basra.
The cleric is a follower of radical Iraqi Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr
and the captured soldier "will be treated as a concubine" if handed
over to Mr Sadr.
Mr al-Bahadli also offered a reward for the capture of other
soldiers and any member of Iraq's governing council.
Mr Sadr delivered his own sermon on Friday, defying US attempts to
arrest him.
Dozens of Mr Sadr's loyal militiamen have been killed in recent
clashes with US forces around the Najaf area.
Mr Bahadli said 100,000 dinars (£40) would be paid to anyone who
detained a US or British soldier and 25,000 dinars (£10) to anyone
who caught one of the 25 members of the US-appointed governing
council, unpopular with many Iraqis.
The reward offer comes after reports purportedly from Osama bin
Laden offering gold for killing top US and UN officials in
Iraq.
A message on the internet promised 10kg (22lb) of gold to anyone
killing US administrator Paul Bremer or UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi,
as well as UN chief Kofi Annan.
