This is what I feel too. Ladies seemed to be more capable of
maintaining these platonic relationships. Guys, on the other hand,
have problems with this. Most likely the guy is interested in the
female counterpart, rather then just remaining platonic. Guess we
are on the same freq man. 
However, I do know of guys who are have quite a number platonic
relationships with gals. Well, they seemed like buddies. All of
them have either younger or elder sisters. Maybe this's the
contributing factor?????
