Mass food poisoning case in Singapore claims second
victim
SINGAPORE: The mass food poisoning outbreak
involving an Indian rojak stall at the Geylang Serai temporary
market has claimed its second victim.
Norani Kassim, 59, who was warded in Alexandra Hospital, died
shortly before 10am on Wednesday. The hospital said she was warded
with food poisoning on Saturday.
To date, the outbreak has killed another woman, 57-year-old canteen
assistant Aminah Samijo and caused a 38-year-old expectant mother,
Rosiah Samat, to miscarry.
Another 137 people have also fallen ill. The Health Ministry said
37 people were hospitalised and 100 others received outpatient
treatment when they experienced abdominal cramps, vomiting and
diarrhoea after eating at the stall.
It said two of the cases were traced to bacteria commonly found in
raw or partially cooked seafood but stressed that investigations
were ongoing.
In 2007, more than 150 people fell sick after eating cakes bought
from bakery chain Prima Deli but there were no reported
deaths.
