Yes, I have been using a security tracking software as part of a
package for my laptops:
1. Security cable with lock: I tie it around the table legs in the
library when I use my laptop, in case I need to go to the toilet
etc...
2. A metal plate with identification number that is stuck to my
laptop with a special industrial grade glue. It is supposed to take
several tons of force to remove the plate and even if you do manage
to remove it, it will leave an indelible mark on the laptop case
with the message, "Stolen property". So it makes it impossible to
sell.
There is also a red sticker that warns thieves that the equipment
is being tracked and police identifiable
3. A tracking software installed on my laptop. Each time I connect
up to the net, it checks in to the security company without the
user knowing. So wherever you use the laptop, the security
company's computer can track it. If the laptop is lost, you inform
the company and they will locate the laptop the next time the thief
connects up to the internet. The security company will give the
location to the local police anywhere in the world to apprehend and
recover the laptop. This system in the US comes with a guarantee:
if they do not get your laptop back within a certain time, they
will pay for a replacement.
4. An insurance policy for my laptop, which will pay if it is lost
or stolen.
